We had the good fortune of connecting with Roxanne Hunt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roxanne, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

I have had an entrepreneurial spirit for some time and had already experienced working on my own in a few other areas. Although I hadn’t planned on or even thought about being a wedding officiant, the idea started from a request by someone who had heard me speak from the stage, loved my message and energy and wondered if I would consider officiating his sister’s wedding. I explained to him at the time that I was flattered but that I didn’t have any knowledge or experience about officiating weddings but that I was intrigued by the idea. I asked him for a little time to do some research and I immediately went into “search and creative mode” and gladly accepted his request. I officiated my first ceremony and as being in front of a crowd was not new to me, I actually loved the experience and couldn’t wait to do it again. Someone who actually attended that wedding asked me to do another one. I got so much positive feedback from these two experiences and could not stop thinking about it! It was soon after, I realized that I created ceremonies that were unique to my style and were not being done by anyone else. I soon got serious about offering my services as an official business and things took off from there!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

Many of my clients are looking for an officiant who does not simply offer “template” ceremonies – such as…”Please choose verse 1,2, or 3….that kind of rigidity and conformity. I have morphed over the years into how I do things today, but from day one realized that I had to offer weddings that were creative, one of a kind, heartfelt, warm, personal and with a touch of fun. I don’t follow the same traditional rules that many others do so my ceremonies take a lot more time to prepare because each one is different and particular to the couple I am marrying. I have learned that there are definitely some wonderful parts and aspects in wedding ceremonies that I carry over each time, but each time and for each couple they are different. Sometimes (although rarely), clients insist on things being done a certain way and of course I always honor that because at the end of the day, I care more that I offer my couples what they want and not be inflexible about “my own agenda”. I always take the time to explain why I think it might be better doing it a different way. But at the end of the day, it’s about happy clients. The wedding business is one business where you only get one chance to get it right. My “secret sauce” is in taking the time to get to know my couples so I can bring their story and ceremony to life in a way that is personal, heartfelt and one-of -a-kind.

Along the way, I have had a snafu or two, so now I have built-in safeguards to ensure that certain things don’t repeat themselves. Like the time, a very long time ago when I unknowingly double booked myself for 2 different clients on the same day and timeline. Luckily, I realized my error far enough in advance that I was able to find another officiant for the displaced couple. Whew! I take my business seriously and now have a way of bookkeeping that never allows for this to happen. And thank God, it never has! We always learn along the way.
I’m really excited to announce that as I am also a commercial actor and host, I will soon be pitching my own TV show, “Celebrating Love”.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

I am an adventurer at heart and although I realize that routine is necessary in some things to varying degrees, there is also great value in being spontaneous and trying new things. One of my favorite things to do is what I call a drive to nowhere. I always have some drinks in a cooler, my running shoes as well as my beach chair and clothes in the trunk just in case a great hike or beach shows up!  I also have a way of exploring things in a different way each time I visit. For example, even if I go the same place again, I will often make a point to go to a new restaurant, meet someone new or turn down a different road. Oh, some of the great adventures I have had by being open to try new things! So Cal has so many awesome events and places to visit in a relatively close space!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

I want to acknowledge the greatness in everyone who may only have at this point an inkling of an idea, a desire or a thought about what they might like to pursue. Or perhaps even dream of “something more” but not yet know what that something more is…I believe strongly that we all have a gift to share, and many people don’t know yet what that is. Being open to this idea is the first step! I also want to thank my friend Bill, for asking me to officiate my first wedding. Because of him, I now have another successful business that I truly love and know makes a difference. And perhaps, my greatest gift in my life is my mom who taught me that I could do whatever I set my mind to. She loved unconditionally and instilled confidence in me that I was someone special. Even though she passed a very long time ago, I often share a little bit of the wisdom she gave me about relationships in my ceremonies.
