We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruth Ganev and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ruth, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
My ability to connect with people and make them feel comfortable contributes a great deal to my success. People are generally nervous in front of the camera and they are feeling vulnerable. I talk people through my shoots in a way that helps them forget they are in front of the camera and also helps them to be themselves. My ability to read body language and facial expressions and to adjust those to get a better pose and expression, usually means I am relaxing the person. I also love talking to people and finding out about them, so I ask a lot of questions, talk a lot and I think, at least for most people, they start to forget about being self-conscious. I am in a service profession, so being able to listen, read people and give them what they want, is key to providing good service.
What should our readers know about your business?
Developing the business side of myself has not been easy. I love creating. I used to dance, I did fashion design, and until I started in photography, I never had to think about being a business person. I know how to be professional, but that is different. Marketing, selling and keeping track of finances is not my biggest strength. It has been an interesting challenge and a good one for me to balance my creative abilities with learning to run a business. I see it as learning to take care of myself. Learning to sell what I create is taking ownership of what I have to offer the world. Marketing is creative, so that was easier for me to think about, but, of course, marketing is a big challenge. Getting lots of help is so important. That is where networking is important, because I meet all kinds of business professionals that can educate me in the areas where I need the most help in my business.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Portsmouth is a great place to visit!! It is a wonderful seacoast town in New Hampshire filled with creativity. It has art galleries, great restaurants, harbour tours and shows. My favorite restaurant is Raleigh, which overlooks the Portsmouth Memorial Bridge. My favorite brunch spot is Elephantine – the most amazing brunch ever!! All summer long, the Music Hall has had outdoor concerts on the street. The shopping is fun and you can stop at all the art galleries at the same time! Most of all, the people are so friendly!!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The influence and support of so many people have helped shape my success. The networking groups where I live are filled with amazing, supportive people. They are so willing to help people who are striving to build a business. The local chamber has been instrumental in me getting out in the community and meeting people, as well as my BNI chapter here in Portsmouth.
