We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Edwards and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ryan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Having control over how quickly or slowly I succeed has become extremely important to me over the years. As an employee, I frequently went above and beyond in an effort to do well or serve my clients better. No matter how average or above average my performance, I was only able to make incremental improvements in my financial situation and career. The reason is because someone else, my employer, was the one deciding when I deserved a promotion or pay raise.

Starting my own business was exciting and at the same time, the riskiest thing I’ve ever done. Although I’m still in the first few years of owning my own business, I’ve already been able to see my level of success affected directly by my efforts. The harder I work at building relationships with my clients, developing my amazing team, and continuing personal and professional development, the greater improvement I see with my revenue. The revenue allows me to continue to invest in my team and my business to set us up for continued long term success.

What should our readers know about your business?
We’re a little different from other insurance companies; we help people manage everyday risk. Most people don’t realize that not having the right coverage on their auto insurance can directly impact their retirement savings. Many of us receive employee benefits, but do we know how they work or when they don’t apply at all? From making sure you have a place to stay if your home suffers a loss, to making sure you have enough assets to live comfortably in retirement, my office offers a wide range of services. We want to help our clients build a wall of protection around what’s important to them.

Setting goals and planning ahead is the start of any good recipe for success. I spent years learning from successes and failures I saw my company go through. I laid out systems and processes to replicate or improve the successes and avoid the failures. No matter how well I planned, there were new mistakes and surprising wins during my startup years. I don’t think anyone could call starting your own company easy, but preparedness helped me overcome obstacles. The ability to adapt your business to rapid changing environments is a huge necessity. Another is to have your ‘why’, your reason for doing what you’re doing, firmly planted in your mind. If you don’t keep your motivations in front of you, it’s difficult to keep going during tough times.

When people consider working with my State Farm Agency, they should expect to build a long-term relationship with me and my staff. Be prepared to share what’s important to you, besides price. The only way for us to offer good advice and service, is by getting to know our clients. If we don’t know what’s important to you, we can’t help you properly protect it. Sure, we can just give you a quote, but that’s not reeeally what we do. We’re here to help you protect against what can go wrong, so you can invest in what can go right.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Park Place at Santa Monica Pier is always fun, followed by lobster rolls at Blue Plate Oysterette.

Hamburger & a milkshake at Ruby’s in Hollywood and then walking a few blocks to enjoy a concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

Disneyland, Six Flags, and Universal Studios are all amazing if you’re into theme parks, and I believe they all service delicious giant churros!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my dedicated and hard working team, Ron, Danielle, Nettie & Grace. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to grow my business!
