We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Greene and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Monarch Athletic Club was born out of an observation while I was in residency (Dartmouth) and fellowship (Mayo Clinic) regarding barriers that allowed for individuals and society to truly achieve optimal health and wellness. I had grown weary spending hours treating, surgically repairing and nurturing back to health individuals who either did not know, did not care, or did not have access to opportunities that would allow them to build a foundation fortifying their opportunity to live a long and healthy life. The project then was accelerated when my partners who were searching to create a more sophisticated training model inquired as to what would set their idea apart from the traditional landscape. It was at this point the opportunity and vision became one. Built upon the belief that if an individual has the ability to focus on the 5 critical pillars of health, a long fulfilling life free of disease is achievable for anyone: 1.) How your body functions (Preventive Medicine) 2.) How your body moves (Strength and conditioning) 3.) How you take care of your body (Physical Therapy/Recovery) 4.) How you fuel your body (Nutrition) 5.) Surrounding yourself in an environment that will support you in achieving your goal (Community)
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Monarch Athletic Club is the first of it’s kind model that combines all aspects of health in one place. We do not want any member to have to start their car twice to get to their goal of the healthiest and highest performing version of themselves. We as a team are proud we have been able to bring this idea to life in the teeth of a global pandemic, establishing ourselves as an essential business and demonstrating that investing in your self, your health is the most important investment one could make. Not only for you, but for your family, co-workers and anyone else you interact with on a daily basis. We are continually facing new challenges as we have learned no matter what we do, there will always be opportunities to evaluate what we have done and how we may be able to improve. We are also battling against generations of pre-conceived notions of how healthcare should be delivered both at the personal and professional level. Reframing what and how someone should aim to achieve to optimize their life may seem daunting, we have proven it does not have to be and you also do not have to leverage your financial future to do so.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Any place on the West side of LA is good by me. If I had to take them anywhere for dinner it would be Toca Madera or Elephante. Food quality and ambience are impeccable. Ojai is one of my favorite places to visit and reset. There is a power, an energy in that valley that is unlike anywhere else I have been in California. As midwestern transplant, the power and serenity the ocean provides is also something I wish everyone had access to. Spending time in Santa Monica/Manhattan beach in the sun, feet in the sand, and finding my center near the ocean is something I offer to every visitor to the area.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not have been able to build what we have without our partnership group (Mikey Tanha, Tosh Berman, Paul Freschi, Prem Akkaraju, Praveen Chandra, Matt Smith) providing valuable insight as we developed this thought seed into a growing tree and soon to be forest of trees. Additionally, our founding team of Physical Therapists (Dr. Mariel Schofield, DPT) and movement specialists (Brandon Marsan, Natan Shemtov, Joseph Geletko, Ryan Nguyen, Diana Cordova) have been critical to our success. For me personally, mentors I have had through the various stages of my medical training have allowed me to better understand not only the human body, but how to be a leader with patients and a medical team in the very chaotic landscape medicine and health may be at times.
