We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Herrera and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sam, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
The value that matters most to me is stay original, which can mean multiple things. I believe if you always aim to stay true to yourself, listen to your inner voice/intuition & do what is right; you will always end up in a better position than before.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I always aim to promote accessibility to everyone who wishes to create art and be recognized for it. With this in mind, I’ve always been mindful while taking on any sort of project; creative or not. Making sure to listen and include others in my community, and those who I may be strangers to me. I have never been shy to use low cost tools, mediums and such to create; and I believe it is something that separates me heavily from some major artists. I have learned that being afraid and thinking about things you want to do, instead of just doing it, will usually just result in wasted time and someone else doing it before you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d say use the metro and go see some art, get some mexican food and relax at the park with snacks. LA public transportation was my first literal vehicle to explore on my own while growing up low income. Heading to downtown LA via the 460 metro and walking around looking at architecture or hopping onto the gold line at union station and shop for garden decorations. The chinatown train station is one of my favorites, especially as the sun sets over the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family, who supports me in any way they can to ensure I stay productive. My friends, who I can lean on when I need a break or to recharge. & for the members of my community who support me online and at in person events, the connection and conversations we share always leave me feeling more inspired to create.
