We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Salman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sam, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
While attending The California Institute of the Arts, it became blindingly aware that that institution had no direct links to the entertainment industry. As I was attending to acquire my higher degree in Theatrical Costume Design, I saw an opportunity for both myself and future graduates who want to work in the entertainment industry. I thought, “wow, there isn’t a costume shop for miles…and nothing in Santa Clarita.” So I worked on starting Northern Costume LLC. Now, the newest IATSE local 705 wardrobe union shop. My business partner, Zach Theberge, and I are elated to be able to bring skilled and talented minds to our industry.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Location is Key!!! Northern Costume LLC. is based the Valencia Industrial Park, we provide a local resource for costume construction and rental to the growing Entertainment Industry within the Santa Clarita Valley and beyond. Was it easy to get to where we are today? Absolutely not…No one handed me money and said “Make it happen.” No one opened a door and ushered me in. I was not one of the lucky ones in the right place at the right time. I strategized to get here, schemed to get by and worked my @ss off every day so that the results of tomorrow were low enough for me to pick thanks to my work today.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I wanted to share LA with someone, I would start with a Jinpachi sushi dinner in West Hollywood then stroll through Hollywood and stare at the Star Walk of Fame. We’d then zip downtown for a roof top bar drink and late night snack. Los Angeles always has something to offer any time of day or night whether it by the coast or downtown. It’s a sparkling city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank all the people who believed in my journey, through my champions and my falls. My family both chosen and selected. Friends who bought masks from us last year so that we could survive the downtime during the pandemic. A big shout out to the great creator. I want to thank the voice inside my head that pushed me every night when I was reading August Willson or Brecht or whatever insane about of homework Camille Benda would assign us (I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way) say to me, “KEEP GOING!” And I’m so happy that I did stick with it…Thank you world.
