We had the good fortune of connecting with Sami Ullah and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sami, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to start something that could take off overnight. I realized the opportunity in the security industry and saw the potential to make a difference. I risked my entire life savings in order to pursue my dream and knew if I didn’t give 100% effort into Citiguard, it wouldn’t be where it is today.
What should our readers know about your business?
Citiguard was created in 2007 as a small start up security firm looking to reinvent the idea of a transparency and communication within the security industry. It was frustrating for me to see the lack of communication between the clients and the companies I had previously worked for. I’ve always believed that in order to create a good product you need to invest in that product and the people responsible for creating the product. Starting a business is never easy. As prepared as I was, there was still a learning curve. Motivation has been my key to success. I wake up everyday thinking about how we can improve and adjust to set ourselves apart. I am fortunate enough to be surrounded by a team that feels more like a family. As an added benefits based company, we encourage all employees to move up and grow in what we hope is a lifelong job opportunity.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I make it a point to take my friends to the Getty Villa. The art and ambience is my usual go to for creative inspiration. I would set aside a day to go to the beach. Neptune’s Net in Malibu is my favorite spot to get fish and chips. Barton G’s in LA is always a fun place to go because they’re food is delicious and very creative. I would go there just to see the look on their face when they order fish and it comes with a samurai sword or a steak with a 3 foot fork. I like to show the incredibly diverse side of Southern California. There is so much culture in the Los Angeles area to experience that I find myself trying new things all the time, I would try my best to give them a taste of what we take for granted.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve been a huge fan of Gary Vaynerchuk and have avidly watched his continued success. I avidly watch his youtube videos and listen to his podcasts to learn and find motivation. He has really guided me when times get tough.
