We had the good fortune of connecting with Sasha Odesa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sasha, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to be an actor. The idea of bringing stories to life have always attracted me, and the idea of becoming someone else thrilled me. There’s so much magic in being in a scene and truly in the moment with another actor. It’s in times like this that I lose track of time and feel truly alive. Nothing can quite compare to taking all that you have inside of you- your experiences, your joy as well your pain and molding it into the character you’re embodying. Furthermore, the idea of taking the pain and recycling it into art gives me so much hope in that even the darkest days are here for a reason to make you a better actor. It’s also incredibly rewarding to know that your work has am impact on someone. When my art moves an audience that’s when I know that I’m on the right path!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love exploring human nature through playing complex characters: strong, tormented, flawed- they are all fascinating to me. Every one of us is a unique human being and we each bring something different to the table. I think that my strength is in having had a lot of interesting life experiences that have taught and have humbled me a lot. I am originally from Ukraine and I’d love to tell more Ukrainian stories. I’m still on a journey of becoming who I want to be. What I’m learning is that everything happens at the right time and for a reason and that the bigger the challenge the bigger the reward. Something that I want people to know is that I’m here to be a channel of storytelling. To tell the stories that matter, that need to be told.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d definitely take them to Butler- it’s a great coffee shop to do work at or to hang out. We’d also take a lot ot walks around Greenwich Village, Soho, Tribeca. One of my favorites is along the Hudson River Greenway. I’d definitely take them to the gym or we could go hit some golf balls at the Chelsea Piers Golf Club. Since the rooftop season is here we’d hit up the Butterfly Soho rooftop. Fun places for dinner are the Noortwyck, the Wayan or Jeffrey’s Grocery. My go-to bars are The Garrett in the West Village or Employees Only. We would also go see my friend’s band “Margot & The Midnight Tenants’” play a show in Brooklyn! I’d love to take my friend for a weekend in Montauk to enjoy the sunshine and the social scene.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe everything to my friends and family who always support me believe in me. One “I believe in you” can outshine a hundred rejections. My loved ones believed in me even before I believed in myself. Surrounding yourself with positive and encouraging people is crucial!
