Meet Segun Jiboku | Textile Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Segun Jiboku and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Segun, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
My artistic journey began at the age of 15, when I discovered my passion for creative expression. I learned the basics of making cloth banners, cutting paper stencils, and customizing clothes from a roadside artist. This early exposure sparked a fire within me, and I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the arts. Since then, I have dedicated myself to honing my skills and exploring various mediums to bring my ideas to life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a passionate artist, my creative journey began with informal training at a roadside art shop. I later honed my skills at the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, where I earned a Double Major in Painting and Graphics Design (2003-2006). I furthered my education at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Nigeria, earning a Bachelor of Arts (2008-2011) and Master’s degree in Textile Design.
After facing initial challenges breaking into the art market, I persevered and gained momentum. Notable milestones include selling three works at an art fair, participating in my first group exhibition in 2019, and being selected among the top 10 artists for a gallery exhibition.
My artworks have since been showcased at prestigious gallerias and events in Nigeria and beyond, earning critical acclaim for my bold, vibrant color palette, intricate patterns, and powerful storytelling. I primarily employ embroidery techniques using needle and thread, while continuously experimenting with diverse mediums, styles, and concepts.
As a talented and dedicated artist, I continue to make a significant impact on the Nigerian art scene with my thought-provoking and visually stunning creations.
