We had the good fortune of connecting with Sergio Caldera and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sergio, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always challenged myself to growth within an organization, I am the type of individual that understands the importance of consistency and although it feels repetitive, it is vital to personal growth. Once I have reached a pinnacle within an organization, I work on the next step or ask myself “In what way can I make myself better as an individual as well as how can I grow into the next position within an organization?” I consider myself to be result-driven and believe in the idea of having a system for whatever industry is out there and understanding that, in time, the operation it self requires to evolve in order to adapt to new forms of business, operations, etc… The process is what has prepared me in starting my own business.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a child I was always intrigued by the idea of how homes were built. Growing up we didn’t have much and felt that if I knew how to build a house we can have one of our own. Fast forward, I started working with a General Contractor whom started HIS company and was looking for someone to help him, not only run his operation but GROW his business. Per usual I started at the bottom, learning the why’s and the why not’s so to speak, until I worked my way up to creating and running my own department. We reached plenty of milestones and successfully grew the business until I reached a pinnacle within that company and there was no more room for growth. I decided to follow those footsteps however, considering the evolvement of the industry, I decided to focus on a particular specialty trade which is roofing rather than general contracting. Roofing presents numerous of challenges beginning with our state compliances. That alone would drive most folks away from proceeding, so is it challenging? YES! But that’s the idea, there is a process and there are procedures on how to operate and we lack legitimate c39 Roofing Contractors that do things the right way. Is it expensive, YES, but there are so many areas of opportunities in this field that I feel it gives me the prime opportunity to separate myself from anyone else. Most “roofers” are looking for a quick buck and will cut cost expense by doing the bare minimum, replace the material (if that) and move along. I have seen so many incorrect new roofs followed by “I can’t get a hold of the guy that did my roof, he no longer answers my call.” I am here to change that, I am here to educate homeowners, I am here to ENHANCE your ROOFING experience by providing SOLUTIONS to your roofing system.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Angeles is full of places, sights to see and locations to experience. In an ideal situation I would take my best friend to experience any and every home team sporting event, all sports venues are great to experience, from newly built SOFI and INTUIT Dome to our historical venues like Dodger Stadium and the Rose Bowl. I would focus on small businesses but of course there are some major chains I would treat. Street tacos for sure! With an abundance of multi-cultural locations that one week will never be enough. Hollywood Sign, New 6th Street Bridge (the engineering is amazing), Santa Monica, Long Beach, just to name a few.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Life has surrounded me with so many forms of love, inspiration, support, mentors, leaders and leadership books/seminars I can thank, as well as negative ambassadors, but most important, out of everyone out there, has to be my Mother. It is my Mother that has had a profound influence on me. It has been her belief in me that has helped me set my mind before I approach any situation. Her mentorship over me as a child was to be independent, to not be a “burro” as she would so put it. Always went above and beyond to set the standard she felt she lacked with my siblings. She would encourage an accountable and responsible state of mind in me and always set me on a pedestal and never forgot to tell me that her goal is to make a successful individual out of me.
