We had the good fortune of connecting with Shandell Maxwell, PhD and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shandell, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

My thought process behind Byrd and Maxwell Coaching Institute was to help people recognize and optimize their personal strengths, creativity, and talents through professional life coaching. My goal is to prepare people to bring and influence greatness in their lives and the world.

The inspiration for the business came in the form of outreach from friends, colleagues, and former employees who wanted help with identifying their purpose in life, especially after COVID hit. Most of my clients work in the veterinary industry which has fortunately stayed busy throughout the pandemic, but the demand adds on to the existing challenges the industry faces with reducing burnout and the suicide rate amongst Veterinarians and veterinary support staff.

So, for me it was a no-brainer to partner with Covina Animal Hospital to support the people who take care of the companions that so many people need right now! In addition to coaching the staff, I also lead operations and our goal is to create more efficiency in our processes to reduce the chances of burnout and enhance our client and patient experience.

Working with the team at Covina Animal Hospital has been extremely rewarding! I’m definitely fulfilling my purpose and am grateful for the opportunity to help others do the same in the veterinary space.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

This year, Covina Animal Hospital is celebrating 84 years of providing veterinary care in the city of Covina! Covina Animal Hospital has always been focused on serving the community and putting people first. The current owner is Jake Waas, CVPM. He is carrying on the family legacy after his mom Dr. Ortmayer retired in 2016. Supporting hospital management is Heidi Traylor who has worked at the hospital for nearly 20 years and brings a wealth of knowledge about the history of the hospital and its processes. The Medical Director at Covina Animal Hospital is Dr. Laurie Kelban and she has served the hospital and the community with quality patient care for nearly 40 years!

What makes the staff at Covina Animal Hospital so special is that they are a reflection of the diverse community they serve, said Shandell. They’re also passionate about serving the community with quality patient care. Many of them have worked several decades at the hospital and have continued to increase their knowledge about best medicine and customer service making Covina Animal Hospital a place of continual learning and growth.

What makes Covina Animal Hospital different is our forward-thinking management team, our focus on people development, our practice of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and our years of service in our community! We are committed to evolving with the times and being the premier family practice in Covina and nearby areas.

Jake says, I am proud to be working with a team that cares so much about people and their pets. When you have a collective group of people who are passionate about what they do, magical things can happen. It is exciting to see the bonds between our clients and our team grow stronger so that there is a more effective partnership in helping pets live longer, happier, and healthier lives.

If I were to give advice to my younger self, it would be to practice self-care and build my emotional intelligence. As a leader you have an obligation to the people you lead to be mindful of the mental energy you bring with you to work every day. It is important that you have your own house in order before you can successfully lead others.

Our purpose is to help pets live longer, happier, and healthier lives. But how we accomplish our purpose is by investing in the growth and development of our people. This is why it is so exciting to have someone with the professional background and expertise as Shandell working internally with our team. We believe the stronger our team is, the more effectively we can partner with pet parents to provide quality care to their pets.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If you visit Covina Animal Hospital, we highly recommend Georgie’s for great local Mediterranean food and Zodiac Juiceology & Apothecary for vegetarian options. If you are here during the holidays, the Annual Covina Christmas Parade is a fun event!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to Shawn McVey of McVey Management Solutions and Dr. Quincy Hawley and Renee Machel of Get MotiVETed for also being voices of wellness in the veterinary industry. It’s important that we keep people at the top of our list when we talk about providing quality service and medicine for our pets because it’s people (not machines) who provide the care. Also, as business leaders and coaches we should encourage, exercise, and role-model self-care practices; essentially practice what we preach!
