We had the good fortune of connecting with Shannon Tellez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shannon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my business never really looked like actually starting a business. It began and grew Organically from a necessity for my girls. Looking for home & natural remedies to help with allergies, colds and everything else kids can throw at their mama’s. The concern I had for typical products on the market shelves grew as my girls allergies to even the most sensitive products became worse. As I began my education of all things natural and organic, to try and find more natural topical products, I realized a lot of the plants and flowers in my own garden could help my kids and I began to give these products to fellow Mommies. My goal has always and will always be to provide home grown, natural & organic healing products that are not only effective but sage for all ages
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art started, and always starts, in my garden. I fell in love with Lavender first, thats why it is in my logo! When my daughter broke out in hives, which was a normal occurrence, I researched lavender to see if it would help and as I watched it work miracles on my daughter, I realized I needed to learn about more ways I could naturally treat skin irritants and my dreams began to form. The part best of my products is that they are all home grown and hand crafted by me. I make each product in small or single batches to ensure top quality. My goal is to take some stress off of fellow parents that need these products for their babies and don’t want to Hassel with reading about all of the artificial ingredients in market products.
It took years of education and creating recipes from scratch to formulate MY recipes that are incredibly gentle and yet still effective. It took even longer to build the confidence to take my products to the public. Many sleepless nights, container malfunctions, website crashes and so many other details that I struggled with behind the scenes, including my health. Leaning on my support system and spending quiet time with nature is really the secret to my success. Easy? Absolutely not! Full time teacher, wife, mama of 3, and a chronic illness among other things have made running this business difficult but its the passion that drives me. Receiving a message from a fellow mama that our sleep balm help their child sleep through the night for the first time in months, is what it’s all about. The passion to & dream to connect to fellow women that no longer have to worry about researching ingredients is what makes every single set back seem completely worth it. Plus, sitting in my garden and taking the sights, smells and sounds is an amazing bonus!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a mama of 3, so I don’t get out very much!! I really love to visit places that have nature included. I absolutely love the natural history museum and science center in LA. I also love going to the beach, one of my products have an ingredient derived from the ocean, it’s a special place for me. The original farmers market & Grove is an amazing place to see and visit. My husband took me there for Christmas one year and it was mesmerizing. Also, the grand central market. A great place to visit and support several local food makers. I would also probably schedule a Hollywood bus tour! It’s pretty cool to see where Lucille Ball used to live!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I love being able to shout-out the amazing support system I have that has made my dream possible. First and foremost, having God as the focus of my life is what keeps me motivated and grounded. My husband and children are the reason I push through battles that seem endless and the sole purpose of this amazing venture. They have been my cheerleaders, my right hand, often attending events to help me set up and take down… never complaining that mama is often busy formulating. My closest friends Heather, Danielle, Melinda & Allison are the reasons I have been able to be successful. From the very beginning these friends have talked me out of quitting, listened to my madness and have been my positivity when I didn’t have any. Without these beautiful people in my life, I would be absolutely lost.
