We had the good fortune of connecting with Silvia Askenazi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Silvia, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Tango San Pedro is a Tango Argentino dance studio where people come to learn and dance the Tango. The close embrace so characteristic of Tango dance is beneficial for our health since our brain produces oxytocyn when we are so close to another human being. When we learn this dance, also, we need to use our coordination, balance and we need to be alert and present to communicate with our partner. I think that something that is beneficial for an individual , in the long run is beneficial for a community , in this case the community of dancers.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Teaching Tango is challenging! Is the most difficult partner dance to teach and to learn. Every time a new student arrives, I get super excited about seeing him/her grow and walk through their frustration to finally enjoy this amazing dance. I learned that patience is key, when you are teaching you have to be the most patient and loving person! Tango San Pedro is now known in the dance community, 13 years ago it didn’t exist and I made it happen.
Organising Dance parties, we call them “Milongas” is super fun because you see your students dancing on the floor, finally enjoying the results of their hard work, and meeting other dancers from the community. My milongas are unique because I host them in our beautiful studio dedicated to tango, decorated with photographs and paintings with tango themes.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my family visits from Germany, we go to places with nature like Joshua Three, Big Bear or the beach right here in San Pedro. They loved Las Vegas and San Francisco. They like to eat mexican food and burguers! We have been to the Magic Castle, a Laker’s game (with earthquake included, which was super exciting for them!), The Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood, and they also love to drive around and just see famous buildings or neighborhoods.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife Annie deserves a lot of credit because she has been supporting me and encouraging me in this journey.
