We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonia Saunders and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sonia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I first started Mujeron Movement I wanted to create a safe space for Latina women who felt they were meant for more. Our culture will often tell us once we become mothers we can no longer follow our dreams or they guilt trip us for feeling like we want more out of life than just staying home and raising our children. I created this community in order for us to have a safe space where we could say out loud that we do want more and that is okay. I created this community when I was going through one of the toughest transitions of my life. I had just lost my dream job and had no direction on what I would do next. Little did I know this community would turn into my life’s purpose. Now, I have the opportunity to support women on finding their true purpose while monetizing their talents and building meaningful connections.

What should our readers know about your business?
In 2018, I had just lost the opportunity of my life.
After participating in Univision’s Nuestra Belleza Latina, I thought I would land a TV job, but instead, I was left with no TV career, no direction, and a lot of self-doubt.
During my first participation, another NBL contestant said, “A Mujerón isn’t going to win this competition,” she used the word MUJERÓN to criticize my “fuller figure” and her words haunted me for years to come.
A few years later, I went back to that same place where I felt unworthy, but this time, I created a shirt with the word Mujerón, to represent and honor younger Sonia. The version of me who was emotionally broken yet unwilling to let herself be held down by another’s idea of what a REAL WOMAN is.
This is how Mujerón Movement was born.
Today, I live my true purpose by helping Latinas get out of their own way. Together, we remove self-limiting beliefs, radiate confidence, gain clarity within your vision, and build your own communities of impactful MUJERÓNES.
What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?
You truly cannot build your dream life and business without community. It takes a village, people that believe in you, that mentor you and support you along the way. Building this community would not be possible without the endless support of my close circle and the Mujerón community.
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
The biggest message I would like the world to receive from my brand and story, is that it’s never too late to build your dream life. I think a lot of times we got lost in society’s timelines and stop doing what we love. I hope that every woman that attends out event, listens to our podcast or interacts with our content leaves knowing they have everything within them to make their biggest dreams come true.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely let them try all the tourist spots LA is know for, but after that I would take them to places that show the diversity and culture that makes up this beautiful city, I was born and raised my early childhood in East Los Angeles. I love visiting East LA because it allows people to see the history of what the Mexican community has contributed to this city. I would take them to El Mercadito where you can find a lot of Mexican vendors and try different foods. I would also take them to one of the many beautiful beaches in the city. There are so many to pick from but one of my favorite is Santa Monica, this is where my parents would take my siblings and I all the time. I would also take them hiking as it is one of the best views of the city. I think the majority of the spots I would choose are based more on what takes me back to growing up in LA and not all the trendy spots LA is known for on social media.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out all the women who have believed in the mission behind Mujerón Movement. Those who supported us through sponsorships, joined our coaching program or anyone that has shared about the movement. This community would not exist without any of them and it is this incredible community because of them. There are so many who have played a key role in creating this safe space, but to everyone that in some way has helped me, thank you!
