We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Todd Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steven, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
There’s something innately and powerfully within me that sees, feels, and lives artistically and creatively – and has always done so, even before I knew it. Growing up more academically and athletically, my shift into art – specifically acting and performance initially – was so very palpable in feeling “right” that there was no question about it being the correct path ahead. Through life’s unique twists and turns, the essence of my creative pursuits brought me to Reiki, a most powerful yet gentle, relaxing yet invigorating, universally and intuitively guided practice: a healing art that allows me to tap into this highly refined balancing, nourishing, and revitalizing energy to be of support to myself and others. It felt right, even though it was a different artistic path, as right as right can be.
In practice with clients and students, Reiki becomes a dance of healing support, a connected dialogue, the (re)designing of one’s energy within, for the greatest physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being of us all. I have found my art and creative connection through Reiki to support others in theirs – whether it is a focused artistic endeavor, a built entity, the expansion of ideas, the strengthening of knowledge and relationships, or beyond. I am nourished inside and out from the continuing exploration and channeling of Universal Life Force Energy, a tangible (yet intangible) energy that keeps me in a creative space. Reiki helps me refresh anew and grow as a teacher, practitioner, person, and guide. Through giving myself over to this beautiful practice, both giver/performer and recipient/audience are fulfilled. It’s a unique and empowering journey each time, and the joy experienced all around is the best reason to continue opening up to this path of creation.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am owner of Reiki For Creative Minds, Reiki practitioner and Master Teacher. For a practice that is still not fully in the mainstream, I bring a special groundedness to energy work that can provide an easier and more connected welcome to anyone who wants to experience – or may skeptically find their way to – this modality. My initial Reiki journey began with a hefty dose of obstacles and happenstance that allowed me to attend a unique retreat for my first Reiki trainings; the trust I built in those earliest stages has continued to strengthen the path that’s been paved ahead with Reiki For Creative Minds. The opportunity to have worked with thousands of people – one-on-one clients, couples, collaborative Yoga/Reiki classes, large group Reiki Sound Baths, students who I’ve had the chance to teach, attune, and certify in Reiki – is a blessing of empowerment all around.
The practice itself is a lifetime journey of continuing growth and mastery; with intention and dedication, the art, connection, and craft blossoms more and more. That’s the easy part for me. As a first-time entrepreneur, there was a lot of learning to start up my business, and there’s a LOT more to learn for continuing to build it and expand its beneficial reach. That’s the hard part, the challenging part. And with any challenge comes the chance to try, fail, learn, experiment, and grow. For me, one of the biggest lessons is part of the 5 Reiki Principles – “Earn your living honestly.” It means to be true to yourself, to your voice and character, to the heart of your genuine intention, to be of service to others.
With a background in acting. I started Reiki For Creative Minds with an initial focus of working with creative professionals – actors, actresses, writers, directors, designers, musicians, etc. Knowing that the external, logistical battles in the industry (which exists for building any business) were difficult enough to deal with, survive through, and overcome on a regular basis, my vision with RCM was to provide a safe and rejuvenating space to release the toxic, the critical, and the stress, and focus on getting clear, getting aligned, getting healthfully refreshed and inspired. Of course, creation also happens much further beyond, and my Reiki practice has been a home to those seeking support with healing, emotional release and stability, life and career clarity, spiritual exploration, some R&R, and so much more – welcoming all creative minds, however I can help.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In a completely safe and secure re-opened Los Angeles, seeing some improv would be on the menu – whether Groundlings. Second City, etc. – for the fun live experience and seeing an action movie in the 4DX theater at LA Live would be the cinematic adventure. Hikes in Griffith Park up to the Observatory would work in some exercise along with viewing an LA landmark; add in a hike up to the Hollywood Sign and the Wisdom Tree. Downtown daytime brewery hopping and some Japanese cuisine at Shojin in Little Toyko for dinner, of course with a stop next door to the expansive arcade. Some other favorite eats: Hinterhof Beer Garden and German Kitchen, Garden Wok, Magpies Softserve, Pho Noho, Pura Vita – this would cover breakfast/brunch, lunch, dinner, and dessert. And a beach day is must! In Santa Monica or Malibu. With some volleyball. Of course.
Some other gems include a visit to The Last Bookstore, Amoeba Music, a game at Dodgers Stadium, the top of the Intercontinental Hotel, and a safe traversing of that wild 6-way intersection in Beverly Hills.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Reiki Master teacher, Tania Marie (https://taniamarieartist.wordpress.com/)! When my seedling of interest and exploration in Reiki was just planted, she provided the foundation, guidance, direction, inspiration, love, and light towards growing my seed into a big beautiful tree. Ongoing support and friendship has been priceless.
