We had the good fortune of connecting with Sukari Reid-Glenn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sukari, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I believe in responsible risk taking. Taking risks defeats Fear and allows us to gain courage and experience. Adding responsibility to it gives us knowledge, insight, and Wisdom. Just about every aspect of my life has involved taking risks. From music: *studying and performing with master musicians in order to gain understanding – even though it meant I would never be the strongest musician in the room *stepping away from my comfort zone of playing as a “sideman” and choosing to be an “artist” *deciding that as an artist, I would also sing – even though VERY FEW had ever heard me do it To marriage & family: *getting married to my best friend when we both had NO money or even a place of our own *homeschooling our child when we’d never known anyone else who’d done it To life: *choosing to truly follow my spiritual beliefs though I didn’t initially know anyone else who believed the same way *deciding to shave my head and just be bald after being diagnosed with Alopecia Areata

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart: I’m older now, but still evolving. My music demonstrates respect for history and culture with relevance and relatability of the present, it represents my belief in my Creator and every aspect of my personal journey in music and life. Musically, I’m most excited with my current project and the singles I’ve recently released. I feel they’re the truest and most sincere representations of my outlook as an artist. Getting to this point in my life and music hasn’t always been easy – but who promised it would be? However, no matter the obstacles or challenges, I believe that my responsibility to achieve and overcome is, ultimately, to THE MOST HIGH. There may be some things I can handle, some I can’t. Some things I can take care of, some I cannot. My job is to do the best I can with the life and talent HE’s given me. The rest HE takes care of – and I’ve seen this over and over again, so I know it to be true. I want people to know that there’s an artist out here that has good music – sometimes with a message – that they can enjoy and that’s different I want people to feel and think when they listen to my music. I want them to be inspired to create strong, beautiful, meaningful works that will be a light in this dark world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d have to say Leimert Park. There is just SO MUCH art and culture! Even during these uncertain times, there is music, poetry, artistry, good food and beautiful people there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am blessed to have quite a few shoutouts! THE MOST HIGH, my husband, our parents, our family, our daughter, my sisters in faith – Shavaun Jackson and Octavia Landix (also my producer and engineer!), Dr. James Newton, Dr. Yusef Lateef, Billy Higgins, Bobby Bryant Jr., Dr. Rod Butler, and David Champion. The Bible and Holy Scriptures.
