We had the good fortune of connecting with Susanne Phan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Susanne, why did you pursue a creative career?
My journey into music began when my parents introduced me to “Kulturskolan,” the local music school in Älmhult, Sweden for a trial day. Although I was initially drawn to the violin, my parents were hesitant about committing to the daily practice it required because of the noise. Eventually, after years of waiting, I was offered piano classes in fourth grade by Lars-Erik Sundell, igniting my passion for music. Through his guidance, I also discovered the Upright Bass and joined his string ensemble, almost substituting for my initial interest in the violin. This newfound love for music guided me to Rytmus Musikergymnasiet in Malmö, where I dedicated four hours each day to commute and later to graduate from Berklee College of Music. It became evident to me that music held a special place in my heart.

This profound connection to music fueled my passion to explore it further, ultimately leading me to where I am today—able to share my stories and experiences with others through music and audio. Today, I work as an audio engineer and music producer.”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have a deep passion for projects, and they have been a constant presence in my musical journey, spanning various aspects of the music world. The diversity of projects offers endless opportunities for learning, and I relish in the challenge that they bring. This passion led me to work on notable projects like Babylon, The Color Purple, and The Glory. I’ve also been fortunate to collaborate as a music producer and audio engineer with talented artists such as Aiida, Jordan Meek, Posey La Fleur, and many more. Initially drawn to music production, my path took a new direction when I joined Igloo Music Studios, ultimately leading me to pursue a career as an audio engineer and producer.

I embarked on a project with Igloo Music called Igloo + Sessions. This platform serves as a music discovery hub, showcasing live video performances of artists, expertly engineered by our talented Igloo Music Engineers. I wanted to merge both of my musical fields, the aim with Igloo + Sessions is to support artists and provide engineers with opportunities to record diverse musical acts—an endeavor that truly represents the best of both worlds. As the executive producer and creative director of Igloo + Sessions, I am excited for the audience to hear and watch our series. Our release date is Wednesday May 17th 2024 and our first artist will be the Norwegian powerhouse Aiida.

One of my firmly held beliefs is stay open to any and all opportunities. This approach has not only facilitated my learning but has also opened doors to new and exciting adventures.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For those who knows me personally, you know I am a complete foodie and adventurer. Los Angeles has so much to offer and it’s hard to recommend only a few things. However, imagine a 70 degree spring day in LA. What a better way the to start of the day by getting coffee at Kumquat, Eagle Rock or Stereoscope, Silver Lake or Hollywood. Then go to a farmers market or maybe flea market. Get some flowers, foods, artwork perhaps. Then hit the Record Parlor, Hollywood for some vintage vinyls.

Around 4pm, drive up to Point Dume and take a walk then watch the sunset. Hours later when the belly starts to rumble it’s time to hit Dan Sung Sa, K-town for some late night Korean Street Food treats. But why let the fun end there, when there’s Wii Spa. Enjoy the different saunas for hours and hours.

If that sounds too crazy, here’s an alternate afternoon and evening plan in Los Feliz. Make a stop at Skylight Books and buy a good read. Then head over to the Los Feliz Theatre to watch a movie. Right after walk over to Miraté or the Dresden have a Espresso Martini and then call it a day.

And then I’d repeat it over and over again…

That’s how I would enjoy my time LA.
