We had the good fortune of connecting with Taimarys Elias and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Taimarys, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my business during lockdown in 2020, and my only thought was “It’s now or never.” I graduated from beauty school in October 2019, thinking I made a HUGE mistake and that the beauty industry was not for me. Beauty school was not what I expected, and I definitely did not feel ready to start my career as a nail tech with the little I learned. I always blamed my lack of effort on bettering my craft on not having enough time to learn. When COVID hit, I was laid-off from my job. I suddenly had more than enough time and everything I needed to teach myself how to do nails. I had no excuses, and I knew that if I didn’t start now, I was never going to. I decided once everything opened again and life was back to normal, I would look for a job doing nails to continue improving my work. When salons opened again, I immediately got hired and started building my clientele at the salon and on the side. Nine months later, I left the salon to go 100% on my own. Next think I knew, I was my own boss, fully booked, and doing what I love for a living.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am blessed to be making money doing what I love every day, and I will always be grateful and proud of that. I wouldn’t say that getting to where I am professionally was hard, but it took a lot of consistency, hard work, and determination. Whenever I face a challenge, I try to stay calm and remind myself that it is going to be ok and that everything happens for a reason. A lesson I learned as a business owner was that overthinking isn’t going to get you anywhere. If you have been thinking of making a change or taking a big step in your business, go for it no matter how scared you are. Whenever I have been scared to do something new within my business and overthink it too much, once I do it, my only regret has always been not doing it sooner

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I were to have friends coming to Miami, I would take them to eat and drink at the best local bars and restaurants and have them enjoy Miami from a local point of view. On the weekend, we would go hang out at Wynwood and enjoy the music and drinks. To end the trip, we would go have lunch at the beach and enjoy the sun and the water.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate the shoutout to my husband. When I started teaching myself how to do nails, he would sit in the living room with me and be the judge of all the nail sets I would do on my practice hand. He was there from the beginning and always pushed me to keep working towards my goals, even at times when I wanted to give up. I don’t think I would have ever started my business if it wasn’t for his support.
