We had the good fortune of connecting with Takaaki Hirakawa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Takaaki, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk equals in my mind as courage. How willing are you to jump in the water before you know anything. Not having a knowledge will give you a great advantage as well. Because you don’t know about a certain thing that your peers may be aware of, you may be able to take the risk and that may lead you to somewhere others couldn’t be.

I will admit that as I got older, I became self conscious and less courageous because I have been exposed to many things. And from now on, because I know, I would like to take a risk and be courageous as if I don’t know anything.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love live performances. Probably because I do music, live shows in front of actual audience is very exciting and crucial to my career. I recently visited an island dedicated to modern art and museum called “Naoshima” in Japan, and this place made me rediscover that I love experiences over staring at a wall. This island gives you an experience over art and it was very beautiful to discover what I really enjoy.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I will definitely take my friend to the Getty museum and at night, above the sky scrapers in DTLA. And if he wants to eat Japanese food, I’ll take him to Torrance. Not Little Tokyo! Then we will drive towards east to get lost in the nature and the vast land of the United States. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shout out to Masta who taught me what music is, and Robert Allan Ackerman who was my first mentor for acting.
