We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamberla Perry and Kevin Douglas Tamberla Perry and Kevin Douglas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamberla Perry and Kevin Douglas, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
We started shooting The Tam and Kevin Show on an Iphone 5 in our Chicago condominium. We were just playing around improvising cracking ourselves up. 5 years later, now living in LA with 2 little ones, Second City decided to help elevate our little show and produce us. THe end game?? We would love our own show on a network that runs for years and years.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We are a married sketch comedy duo raised by the Chicago comedy scene but based in Los Angeles. We are proud of our Chicago roots. We are proud of us for being married 11 years. We are proud that we can work and create together and still raise these 2 little girls. ALL NO SMALL FEATS. But mostly, we are proud of ourselves for being able to create something that while it cracks people up, it also makes people think. We make hard subjects a little more palatable.
Kevin and I met in Chicago while performing in our respective Sketch Comedy troupes Soul Fools (Tam) and kevINda (Kevin). It was Second City that brought us together. Kevin hand-plucked me out of my group to come and audition for another show that he was writing. He did not cast me. Weeks went by and someone dropped out of that show. He still did not cast me. After several other women turned down the roll, I finally got the call. That would be the beginning of a sketch partnership made in heaven.
Both of us put it in our time in Chicago. It’s in huge part to the Chicago Theatre scene that we are where we are professionaly today. Theatre really shaped us as artist and creatives and our theatre homes gave us space to grow.
A couple of big lessons we have learned along the way: The most people can tell you is “NO.” Ask, ask, ask away. If we would not have asked, this partnership with The Second City would have never happened and so many other things that have happend as a reult of this partnership may have never happened.
2. KEEP GOING…and this is something that we all need to constantly be reminded of. Persistence is key. If there is something you really want to do, YOU CAN DO IT! You really can. All you need to do is literally keep putting one foot in front of the other. Dont try to go too many steps ahead because that can get overwhelming… slow, steady steps and you will see the progress. Thats it, you just need to see the progress and you will be propelled to keep going.
Our brand: We are funny, We are married and we are black. LOL We just want to share the joy and love that we have in our home, with the world.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
California is huge and coming from Chicago, we still have not come close to experiencing all there is to experience. There would be some hiking involved, a comedy show, some eating either in Studio City or downtown. Hopefully, they are coming during a time when the Hollywood bowl would have an amzing lineup. We could also do an overnight to San Luis ibispo (SP) or any of the little wine counties. You know we have to visit the beach at least twice and a drive up to one of the canyons where you get the 360 degree view of the city. Now, we need to go do most of those things ourselves!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If there was one person who really encouraged us from jump to write a sketch comedy show and make our “little sketches”, it would be Frey Hoffman. Frey is a friend, producer, cinematographer from Chicago who filmed our very first few episodes for us in 2016. He thought we were funny and he really lit a fire in us to write, create and to take our jokes from our heads to the page and to the stage (screen).
