We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanya Witmond and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tanya, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I had been to India many times to study Yoga and wanted to create an Ashram in my town where I could teach Yoga and Meditation and have other teachers come to teach as well.
It started as a small project and when my husband retired from his company and joined me, it grew a lot more.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always been involved in the Fitness industry, I was a Fitness Trainer, an under three-hour marathon runner, and a mountain climber, but one day I realized I wanted something that not only worked the body but the mind, emotions, and soul as well. So I started studying Yoga and because I was living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at the time, I was able to travel to India seven times and study Yoga.
When I came back to Mexico, I wanted to start an ashram to keep doing what I loved in my country, after a year, my husband retired and helped me build our retreat place.
I love the fact that now I have many teachers coming from around the world to teach and enjoy our facilities.
We love nature and try to care for it, we offer beautiful gardens and great art from India and the Far East.
I’m very happy to have a place where people can come to enjoy nature and transform their lives.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Tepoztlan is a small town an hour and a half from Mexico City. It is beautiful and surrounded by mountains.
The weather usually is very kind and mild. You can go for long walks and enjoy Mexican culture.
Tepoztlan has incredible energy and is a holistic town considered one of Mexico’s Pueblos Magicos.
Apart from walks, you can go horse riding, we offer two Sweat lodges where we do Temazcal ceremonies.
Our Spa offers facials, massages, body and holistic therapies. We have a Vitality pool where you can enjoy
a hydrotherapy warm pool, a cold one, and a sauna, great for detoxing and circulation. We offer Ayurveda treatments, fire ceremonies, sound healing, breathwork, yoga, and meditation classes.
We have a beautiful Stuppa in the center of our retreat place which is a Buddhist monument representing illumination.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I give thanks to GOD cause thanks to him everything has been possible, my yoga teachers in India, and Chakaratani my Vipassana Meditation teacher who recently passed last year. Finally, I’d like to thank my husband Paul who has supported me and helped me materialize my ideas and my dreams.
