We had the good fortune of connecting with Taryn Aronson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taryn, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“Fight for the things that you care about. But do it in a way that will lead others to join you.” Ruth Bader Ginsburg
There’s so many great quotes from RBG but this one really impacted me the first time I heard it. And in 2020 when I rebranded my social media agency it was in the back of my head guiding me.
Today my agency focuses on helping socially conscious brands and service providers create social media strategies that align with their values. I believe that one of the most important things a purpose-driven brand can do is let their customers know exactly what they stand for. And often times the easiest and most effective way to do that is through social media.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’ve been working in social media since 2008. Which was basically the wild west of social. There were no job descriptions, no case studies, no mentors, but also no real way to fail either. I made it up as I went and learned a lot very quickly. After 6 years of working on social strategy for brands like Fabletics, Dermstore and Josie Maran Cosmetics I decided to go out on my own.
Back then, in 2014, my tagline was “I’m all about the touchy-feely side of tech.” That remains true today. But 2020 added a few…tweaks.
Life as we all knew it came to a halt March 2020. Then May and June arrived, ushering in a summer of protests. I was inspired by how many brands were willing to speak out in support of Black Lives Matter. But I was also disheartened by how many stayed neutral. I realized that this was a magical moment when the right thing to do ethically, was also the right thing to do from a marketing perspective. And that I didn’t want to fight with clients about what the right thing to do was anymore.
So I rebuilt my agency and said goodbye to a few long-standing clients. I launched Totally Taryn Social in November 2020 with a new tagline: Socially Conscious Social™.
Today my “touchy-feely tech” focus is no longer limited to helping brands hit their social media goals. I want to teach socially conscious businesses how to communicate their values to audiences that truly care. In short, I want to help mission-based brands change the world through social media.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For starters, I would take them on a tour of all my favorite restaurants. I’m a foodie and LA has some of the best vegan restaurants in the world. I love surprising my carnivore friends with how good plant-based fare can be!

I also love showing people some of the neighborhoods I’ve lived in during my 30 plus years in Southern California. (I moved to Orange County from South Africa when I was 10).
1. Long Beach – Retro Row – Some of the best vintage outside of Palm Springs, at LBC prices
2. Pasadena – Rose Bowl Flea Market – The only thing I’ll wake up before 10am for on a Sunday
3. Los Feliz – Starlight Books and Figaro- What could be better than an afternoon spent browsing books followed by a glass of wine (or 3) at the perfect French sidewalk cafe.
4. Costa Mesa – The Lab – My favorite place to go in high school is still just as cool as it was in 1994. Except now it has a vegan donut shop and a record shop housed in an airstream.
5. South Pasadena – Farmers Market – My local market runs year-round on Thursday evenings 4-7pm. There’s always music and food vendors so you can make a whole date night out of it after picking up your fresh-picked berries, vegan croissants from Frogs Organic Bakery, and cashew cheese from Blöde Kuh.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out my partner Ryan Corrigan. He’s the father of my two cats, a constant source of laughs, and working from home is really just so much sweeter with him around. Even if he does notice every single time I forget an Oxford comma in a caption. He’s also Totally Taryn Social’s in-house videographer and editor so my clients really benefit too.
