We had the good fortune of connecting with Teodor Karakolev and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Teodor, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Ever since I was a teenager, I always wanted to create a business of my own. At first me and my grandfather had the idea of creating a cherry tomato farm. We saw the potential market for it as we both loved the little tomatoes, but there were always an import from outside the country. I should say, I am originally from Bulgaria, a place where there is less variety in fruits and vegetables.

So we had the idea of making a farm of our own. We had some land that my grandfather owned, and we started planning out how to get seeds and what it all will costs. Unfortunately, that was around the time I graduated and headed over to the U.S. to pursue career in music.

While in College in Boston I started working a student employee in the video department. That’s where I learned the basics of handling a camera and capturing live music content. Very soon it occur to me that I could actually make content for people around the school and get paid for it. So, given that I always wanted to be an entrepreneur, I figured out that I need to have a business plan for this new venture. And that’s what I did! Over the course of a couple of months I developed my very first business plan with 3 core services: low budget music video, medium budget music video and a custom high budget version. All of them had badly structured idea of what I was selling and what the “client” would get at the end.

Naturally, I started showing my business plan to my music peers. This quickly helped me get a few video gigs. I started shooting music videos, recitals, music videos, studio session or even general promotional material. All of this while always delivering on time and with the best quality I can provide at the time. The word spread about my “professionalism” and suddenly, I was in business!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own a boutique Media Production Company, called 4Reel Productions LLC. The company was established in 2015, but I’ve been using that name ever since 2013. 4Reel has two major strengths: Expert utilization and understanding of the latest technology; and an amazing network of Television and Film Craftsmen and Vendors.

These two factors has made 4Reel a turnkey solution for the production of multiple commercials, corporate events and live shows. Our business ethic is extremely high and we always strive to delver the best possible experience to our client and their clients.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Growing up in a developing country made it really hard to get out of the stigma that I wiill grow up, get 9-5 job and just go through my live without achieving much. Luckily my grandfather and my mother were the ones that really encouraged me to explore entrepreneurship and creative arts. I learned very early on from them about money management, value of things and the basics of an economy.

Once i got to my teenage years, I was surrounded by a couple of friends who were interested in Stock Exchange Markets so I learned about that too. I remember clearly to date a book that helped me a lot of understand some basic principles of the Stock Market and Economics was Robert Kiyosaki’s, Rich Dad Poor Dad.

In particular to getting start in the Video entrepreneurship, one of the biggest inspirations was actually my video supervisor back at my College. His name is Kevin Grady, and what amazed me about him was that he was so knowledgeable about video! So I wanted to know as much as he did.

Overall it’s been over a decade of great people along my path to being a business owner who had showed me so many different things about our industry, which in turned has allowed me to get better at my business and the services me and 4Reel (my company) can offer.
