We had the good fortune of connecting with Tess Levin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tess, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I honestly get into my head a lot. I second guess myself plenty and I poo-poo (technical term) my ideas frequently. Usually those ideas will shrivel away, never to return again, which proves to me the ideas were not viable options. However, the one thought that always came back to me and nagged at my brain and soul was starting my own business, Fluff Cups Specialty Desserts. I praised the idea of working by myself and for myself. The though that, “the harder you work the more you will progress” stayed steadfast in my brain. I knew that if my passion was a business, and I worked incessantly to bring that to life, there was no stopping me. Whereas, working for a company, there are confines to your role/progress/impact. I really embraced the idea of breaking the mold and trusting myself to work hard and get to where i wanted to be.
What should our readers know about your business?
In 2018, Fluff Cups Specialty Desserts became real. It started from baking dozens and dozens of cupcakes in my minuscule Los Angeles apartment. Cupcakes and desserts covered every surface and my roommate at the time said, “Either eat these or sell them, I can’t even put my cup down” haha. This gave me a brain blast, maybe I start selling my creations” This isn’t a story of overnight success. It is 2 years later and I am continually finding new strategies to succeed in the baking industry. I created Fluff Cups out of my home and I continue to sell customized desserts out of my home kitchen. By no means has it been easy. I believe the saving grace here is that if you love what you’re doing, it doesn’t feel like work. I bake all the time, and even if I didn’t have a company, I would be baking. Because of this, it is easier to overcome challenges because you refuse to give up. I would love the world to know that Fluff Cups started from nothing. It honestly came from a dark place in my life where I didn’t like my job at the time, I felt lost in society, and at a low, I created something beautiful. Fluff Cups is much more than just a bakery, it is my story. I would love to inspire others who feel the same way to build something that they love for themselves. If it doesn’t exist, there isn’t a reason it shouldn’t, MAKE IT!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I LOVE FOOD. (obviously) I would take them to The Bigg Chill Frozen Yogurt, Milk Jar Cookies, B Sweet Dessert, and Sliders Ice cream. Clearly, I am a dessert person. Additionally, you cannot visit LA without brunching in Santa Monica, drinking wine in Malibu, and going to the iconic bars/clubs such as the Bungalow, Bootsy Bellows, and more.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out to my amazing boyfriend, forever love, and best friend, Spencer. Without his unwavering support, Fluff Cups would not be where it is today. He continually makes me a better person and challenges me daily. His confidence in me helped me persevere in the darkest of times. I am so appreciative that I cannot even put it into words. Thank you, Spence, I wouldn’t be me without you.
