We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiffany Cayetano and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiffany, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
From the moment I knew I was pregnant with my first child, I was told by a good friend to always show your children who you are. Most people say things like, before you were born I was doing this, that and the other. Not me, anytime I have the opportunity to take my kids to my gigs they will be there dancing and waving at me while I’m DJing. It’s the greatest gift to show my girls that under any circumstance, Mama will remain resilient and persist to continue to do what she loves. I can’t say I do it all by myself. The partnership with my husband is also a big factor of impact for our kids. We all work as a team and I truly wouldn’t be able to do half the things without my husband. My goal is to show my girls with the action I do, that anything is possible with heart and passion put towards your goals for yourself. Love you, Oscar, Mila & Monae
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Most people know me from dancing and battling with my crew Brooklyn Zoo in New York. That’s where TiffStarr was born. I then decided to take a break from the dance life and move on to being the reason people dance. Music is something I was born into. My Father was a DJ and my Mother always had music blasting while we were cleaning the house on Saturday mornings. I also always played around on my friends set up in high school but it wasn’t until I moved to New York to get my own full set up and start learning. I got my first gig from my first mentors DJ Esquire and DJ Tim Martell opening for the party Beats, Rhythms & Night life in New York. No one knew, but I was 4 months pregnant with my first child that day. I thought to myself will I be able to continue my passion in DJing? It’s already hard for a female in the DJ scene to get opportunities for gigs in New York and now I will have a growing baby! When all odds seemed against me, I was blessed to gig out, and create my own party throughout all 9 months of my pregnancy. I’m grateful to have pictures of me and my belly DJing at 9 months, to show and inspire other women that It can be done and It will be accepted.
Throughout my 7 years of being in the DJ scene I have learned so much from so many people. I’m the DJ who asks questions and is learning at every gig. I want to know it all, so I can return the favor to someone new in the game. I have had my difficult times at gigs but it doesn’t outway the beauty of playing music and seeing the crowd be fulfilled. The smiles and sing alongs get me everytime.
If there is something I want the world to know and feel while I’m DJing is that, I always operate from a place of gratitude and love.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh..I love this! We would first drive to Santa Monica, walk the pier, ride the ferris wheel and then we would rent bikes to ride down to Venice Beach. Of course we would watch the Bboys, Roller skaters, and be in awe of skateboarders at the skatepark. Next, we would make a pit stop at The Venice Whaler for some snacks and drinks on the rooftop. Next day, we would do some shopping on Melrose and hit up one of my favorite stores on Fairfax, Melody Eshani. We would then get a little fancy and have dinner at Catch LA and indulge in the crispy cauliflower and sip on the East Coast Kali. Next day, we would for sure have to make some time to get in a hike at Griffith Park and possibly a workout at Basecamp then have some lunch or early dinner at Notivo and end the evening with some vegan sweets at Mag Pies and Donut Friend. We would then end the week doing some vintage shopping at the Pasadena Flea and then have some brunch at Ivanhoe. Let’s just say that would be the perfect week EVER!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have so much support from my loving Mom & Dad, and close friends but my Husband is truly the person who sees, listens and gives me the best advice. He has been my go to person who helps me in every aspect of my life. I really does take a village to lead us to success, so I would just like to give some extra shout outs to my crew, Brooklyn Zoo, The Beatjunkies, Ladies Of Sound, Ladies Of Hip Hop, my late great brother, Alex who supported me in every way, Brother Richard, DP One my mentor, Brenda Flores, Bertha, Marrisa, Samo Soto, Tia Rivera, and my PIC KaoticBlaze for all the support, inspiration, mentorship, opportunities and love through my journey thus far. Let’s just say, I’ blessed beyond measure.
