We had the good fortune of connecting with Tom Numan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tom, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The single most important factor we’ve found to our success is our customer service efforts. We’re always online to answer questions, we provide as much information as possible, and we’re always available to be held accountable should any issues arise.
This attitude builds trust with the clients, and also encourages them to buy time and time again. We sell a higher price point product, and is often an investment for most of our clients – so they need to feel like they’re paying the money to a company that stands by both their service and their product.
Day in, day out we show up, and always do our best to help. This is a huge part of our overall success in the signage industry.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m a creative at heart, I studied creative topics since high school, and continued that into College. I’ve never been formally trained in any form of business, but have learned all I needed to do by doing it. When I first started I knew next to nothing about selling a product, I could design it back to front – make it beautiful – but I didn’t know how to monetize it. Even the idea of tax etc was a foreign concept. It took years of trial and error, making mistakes, taking learnings. I’m still learning something new everyday, but I’ve learnt an incredible amount by doing it.
When your livelihood relies on you getting these business decisions right, and strategizing ideas to grow the business – they flow much harder and faster than one might realize.
Don’t wait to learn about business, or wait to figure out what you don’t know – as the journey continues all will be revealed!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a big foodie, from casual to fine I love each experience – but the focus has to be how good that food tastes!
Some of my favorite spots are Saffy’s, Woon, Great White & Laurel Hardware. All of which serve the tastiest dishes in their fields, in casual environments.
I’m also a bit of a motorhead, so a quick stop at the Petersen Museum is always aspirational in its own way – and if the sun is high in the sky you’ll likely find me taking a dip at Will Rogers Beach.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The biggest shoutout belongs first and foremost to the incredible Radikal Neon team. Based across 5 countries, the team are banded together via the internet into a force of good to be reckoned with!
Radikal has been very lucky to hire the people we have, and maintain them in their roles. Each team member brings a different element to the party, and has an unwavering desire to see the business grow and go! The energy within the internal team is electric, no pun intended – there’s always new challenges to be tackled, and strategies to implement that the team never fails to get that done. If anyone deserves a shoutout it’s those that bring those neon dreams of our clients to reality.
A special shout out is definitely owed to my friends in New Zealand & Denmark who supported the business when it was only a few months old, spending their own time/money to encourage me to build it to what it has become today is something I will never forget each and every one of them for!
