We had the good fortune of connecting with Toni Christopher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Toni, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I think you know deep in your Heart when it’s time to give up or keep going and I don’t believe it’s ever a quote on quote giving up. I believe we all receive whispers and signs that inform us where we are heading on our life’s path and there are people I know that some would see as giving up but what they found was a calling to something else. It’s so incredibly personal. This question perks up from time to time, especially during this pandemic and it’s been a gift. For me, it confronts where I am and if I’m doing all I need to be doing to express and engage with my Art. I ask myself questions like “Is there something else I could do with my life?” and then these questions ignite a fire in me to take more action, different action because no, I’m not done. I’ve either become comfortable or I’ve stopped working. Persistent creating and collaboration is my heartbeat and if we allow ourselves, we can do it everyday.
Please tell us more about your career. What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
A bazillion lessons. I’m still learning! An important lesson I’ve learned is to stop being someone/something you’re not, People, Places and Things will try to put you in a box and/or tell you you’re not this, you should be that. It stifles and censors your Art and every creative has a unique, authentic voice, style and expression. I am a dramatic actress and love telling the messy, ugly stories that happen in not so precious moments and I would be told I was ‘too intense or women don’t react that way’. I am so insanely grateful to the people who embraced my talent and encouraged my intensity and once I finally gave myself permission to listen to my gut and follow my Heart, my artistry and career became Boom.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of my LA favorites are strolling around Echo Park, lunch at Night + Market Song in Silverlake or tacos at Cactus Taquerias. TeaBop in North Hollywood has the best Cafe Mocha and of course, everyone needs a Ferris Wheel ride at Santa Monica Pier with a reading from Zoltar. LOVE a twilight drive through Hollywood.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Ahhh, there are so many people along the way that impact your journey. Steve Braun and BGB Studio significantly changed the course of my Yellow Brick Road. They are fierce advocates for Artists, encouraging leadership, authentic expression and creating your own opportunities while offering Space and Community to explore and deepen your craft.
