We had the good fortune of connecting with Troy Ambroff and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Troy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk / Reward can Make or Break your career. Knowing when to risk it all, and when to fold is something you can only learn by doing.

Shortly before my first day in the post production world, I risked it all to get to the top.

I was working as an usher at the Wiltern Theater, on New Years Eve, dressed to the 9’s. That night was a Joe Rogan comedy show, and a shift that I badly needed in order to pay my rent.
Unfortunately, instead of being inside (and being paid to watch the show), I was assigned to oversee parking…
Alone, underground, on New Year’s Eve, in a suit, and miserable. They may have put me there because I had already been reprimanded for talking to the sound team on my breaks.

I’m a studio guy, I’m looking for better things than usher work, so I start researching some of the company name plaques in the parking area (the ones with ‘studio’ in the name).

Another usher (who is supposed to radio me when there was a car incoming) drops the ball, and in comes an unidentified car that parks in the space next to the one that I’m standing in.
I put my phone back in my pocket and ask how I can help the man who drove in, was he going to the show?
Serendipity strikes when he says that he is a tenant. Not just any tenant, he happens to be the owner of none other than Sugar Studios, a premium content post production house that does editorial and AUDIO for TV and FILM.

In that moment I knew that I needed to step up, risk it for the biscuit, swing for the fences. I went out on a limb and threw my elevator pitch out the window. Did he need a new audio person? Who knows, but I left with his card in my pocket, and a handful of dreams in the other.

Days later, I had an interview and began working on my first feature film.
I’ve been with Sugar for 3 years and have mixed/designed everything from features to commercial spots.
I went (literally and figuratively) from bottom to top: basement to penthouse suite, and usher to re-record mixer all with one roll of the dice.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a guitar player and producer at heart. I started there before the film world was even a twinkle in my eye.

My band is Modern Eyes, a 5-piece rock-powerhouse that makes you want to dance. In Sept. we play Ohana Fest with the likes of;
– Pearl Jam
– Kings of Leon
– My Morning Jacket
– Maggie Rogers
– Mac Demarco
and SO many more.

We have music steam-able on all platforms and we will be releasing a new EP in August.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I can think of so many must-see spots around LA, but here are a few.

– Quarters KBBQ in K-town
– Sushi Ippo (All you can eat Sushi)
– Stoney Point (a small mountain in the valley that is a short but INCREDIBLY rewarding hike)
– Monty’s (basically a vegan In-N-Out style burger)
– Neptune’s net (Malibu seafood spot)

I could certainly go on and on, but those 4 are some of my top spots.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My story would never be complete without the help of Shantih Haast. She is a gifted recording / mix engineer and owner of Studio 770 in Orange County, CA. I have worked with her for over a decade and cut me teeth under her guiding hand.

I would also like to credit Bret Mazur, Arnold Antony, Christelle Zeinoun, Patrick Garcia, and the rest of the team at Sugar Studios. They watched / helped me figure things out and become a better mixer and team member.

Lastly, I would like to recognize the guys from my band “Modern Eyes.” We have been through ups and downs during our time navigating the music industry and we have learned a lot together. Here’s to what comes next.
