We had the good fortune of connecting with Varissa Brum and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Varissa, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Connecting with people in our local community through food makes me happier than I can describe. There is something about sitting with a stranger and connecting over a dish or cuisine that they know and love. To me, food is the best starting point to get to know who someone is because there are so many meaningful memories tied to meals.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I work both full time as Digital Marketing Strategist and Content Creator. At times it’s difficult to balance the demand from my profession and my passion but ultimately both digital marketing and content creation complement each other quite nicely. I am able to learn skills from both fields and apply them where needed.
The lessons I’ve learned along the way is that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed when trying to balance multiple passions. Taking a step back to breathe is the best way to get a fresh and positive outlook on challenging projects.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Whenever a friend visits the city, I insist on taking them to Koreatown for a late night filled with Korean eats (beyond Korean BBQ), cold soju, and vibrant atmosphere. There is nothing else like it and my friends always leave with fun memories of Los Angeles.
In addition to nights in Koreatown, we make sure to hit LA’s iconic food popup scene whether it’s Gary & Son’s Loco Moco Burritos in Highland Park, Lobsterdamus’ Charcoal Grilled Lobster in DTLA, or Evil Cooks Black Al Pastor Tacos in El Sereno— there’s always a new dish to discover! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the local food community here in LA. They are the foundation of where I am as a food and travel blogger. I’ve gotten to know so many hard working and talented chefs, restaurant owners, and food content creators over the years that I am incredible grateful for.
