We had the good fortune of connecting with Vernon G. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vernon G., other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
The decision to wrangle my pride and deny my ego has catalyzed my personal growth, as well as the growth of SOSS®. For me, pride and ego are self-inflicted, potentially-fatal wounds, if not contained early in the growth process.

As the leader of SOSS®, a personal-care haven built on self-care attributes, it greatly benefits the organization when I am my organic self, without any artificial additives. And because pride and ego have the power to contaminate my purpose and perspective, it is imperative that I check my pride and ego, so I do not hinder the business from scaling in directions that I may have never saw possible.

All that to say, don’t let you stop you from being great.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
For me, as a black man in a corporate environment, I would find myself shrinking who I was to fit in with the majority around me. After a series of “wake up calls”, I promised myself that I would no longer present as anyone other than who I organically am. The first step to my personal freedom was prioritizing my self-care, which led to owning my uniqueness and regrowing my beard.

With an absence of premium lifestyle brands that uplift and elevate the overall grooming experience for the natural hair, melanin-rich community, So Organic, So Suave (SOSS®) exists to produce top-quality hair care and skincare essentials that help you embrace who you are, and welcome who you are growing to be.

Our all-natural, handcrafted, cruelty-free, award-winning grooming essentials are developed with the utmost scrutiny in product integrity, product innovation, and customer satisfaction.

I am most excited to witness SOSS® continue to grow into the world’s most uplifting, customer-centric lifestyle brand for the natural hair, melanin-rich community. By prioritizing how the customer feels, and not solely how they look, we have been able to invest in the microfibers of the brand, to ensure that the entire SOSS® experience is uplifting, motivational, and aspirational. Our top-quality ingredients, aesthetically-pleasing packaging, affirmation-based product names, encouraging e-commerce experience, and welcoming social presence elevates our costumer and community both physically and mentally, inside and out.

SOSS® is here to change the world – by encouraging generations to break out of society’s mold, and embrace what makes you, you.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I was raised in Windsor Hills, so I amplify all of the amazing experiences available south of the 10 freeway.

So whenever someone comes to LA, we must start every morning at Mingle’s Tea Bar, located a little north of Crenshaw Boulevard & Manchester Avenue. For lunch throughout the week, we’ll cycle through Simply Wholesome and Sachi Teriyaki on Slauson, or Hot & Cool Café in Leimert Park. For dinner, it’ll be a daily decision between Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen on Manchester, Woody’s BBQ on Market, and Stevie’s Creole Café on Pico.

For day-to-day activities, we’ll go for runs on the beach, peruse through urban contemporary art galleries, visit any exhibition that the Crenshaw Dairy Mart may be offering, tune into Pop Up Church for the weekly word, stop by Over The Hump LA for monthly bible study, hike the Temescal Canyon Trail in the Palisades, enjoy a beverage at Berkshire House on La Brea, and dance all night at Champ City on Prairie.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give the largest, most grandiose shoutout to the SOSS® Family!

My brother Jeremiah Regis who has elevated our brand’s overall experience since our initial launch in 2019; and has recently stepped in as the Cofounder of SOSS®, officially leading all sales and marketing initiatives as our company’s Chief Marketing Officer.

My brother Laguna Foster, Jr. who leverages his social media expertise to continuously cement our voice within the culture and engage the SOSS® Family.

My brother Kamarr Peoples who has taken control of the SOSS® supply chain so that we may continue to provide top-quality grooming essentials that surpass our community’s expectations.

And the entire SOSS® Family who has made a purchase, followed our Instagram account, retweeted one of our tweets, or passed SOSS® to someone they know! I sincerely thank you all because we would not be able to continue to create feel-great essentials if it were not for your support, so thank you!
