Meet Vid Ken | From Saweetie’s Editor to Influencer to Owning His Own Jewelry Brand

We had the good fortune of connecting with Vid Ken and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vid, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was seeing an opportunity in the market when I was constantly being complimented on the jewelry I wear. This lit a switch in my head and made me realize that every time I post on social media, it is an indirect ad. What better way to promote something in every post than to promote my own brand? I also realized there is not many familiar faces to buy from in streetwear jewelry. All the jewelry my friends would buy are from popular brands that they have no real connection to. I wanted to create something that all my friends and fans could wear and have a deeper connection to, a community.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
For those who don’t know, before being a social media influencer, I was a videographer. My last client before diving into the unknown path of likes, comments and views was Saweetie – yes, Ms. That’s-My-Type herself. I was in charge of the editing and creative direction of her vlog series “The Icy Life” which you can find on YouTube. Now how I got that position dates all the way back to 2018 when I was fresh on the videography scene and doing free work to build up my résumé. I was filming the day-club entrance of a celebrity club promoter in LA when suddenly Saweetie pops into frame and says “what’s up. It’s the icy girl Saweetie.” I didn’t know at the time that, that moment would be so monumental. Fast forward to 2020 when Saweetie’s team reached out to me to take over her vlog series – THEY REMEMBERED ME! I will have to say from 2018 to 2020 I faced many challenges that prepared me for such an opportunity. I learned how to communicate professionally by filming/editing for corporate companies, I learned how to edit efficiently by the crazy deadlines of concert content, and I learned to never quit because through all the hardships I have learned valuable lessons and was able to try again.
I want the world to know that it’s really true that you can do anything you put your mind to, the only limits are in your mind. You have to break past that barrier and keep fighting even when you fail. Failure takes you closer to success.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to Jason Kagi, Jason Bonvie, Kinh, Sean and my girlfriend for being my rocks and pushing me to be the best that I can be. They were there for me when I hit my cyclical rock bottom and helped me up judgement free. They gave me the confidence when mine ran dry, reminding me of who I am and what I have accomplished thus far. I know the entrepreneur journey may seem lonely or that it seems like you need to cut everyone off to focus, but make sure you leave some room in your heart to be loved on your journey. Building as much as you can means nothing when you look back and there’s no one left behind you. The people who support you no matter what mean a lot – even if they don’t fully understand what you do.
