We had the good fortune of connecting with Virginia Guarddon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Virginia, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
It was a summer day during the Covid 19 pandemic in 2020. Life had been very stressful not just for me but everyone, I had just gotten laid off from my previous position as a Regional Sales Manager for a multi-million dollar skincare corporation, it was hard finding a job or career due to the pandemic, and it just came to me while I was driving on a sunny day that I needed to take charge of my life and start my own career.
I didn’t want to be dependent on others any longer or feel disposable ever again, so I decided to unite my two passions into one, poetry and skincare, and I created our Skin Poetry for Poet’s Garden Alchemist. I have so much experience in the industry and also a ton of knowledge about holistic ingredients that I felt this was the way to go. I never looked back again! I am so happy that I took the risk and moved forward with my vision! No regrets!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been a multi-faceted artist since I was a child, from writing poetry to playing piano, singing and dancing. I love all forms of art, because it brings different emotions within my soul that inspire me to do great things. All my life I’ve also loved caring for people’s skin, beautiful skin is just like art. We are all art in one way or another, and skin is just beautiful when it’s healthy no matter the age.
I became an aesthetician when I was 20 years old while I was finishing my college degree in Science from the University of Central Oklahoma and decided the beauty industry was the closest related industry to art that I could find. It spoke to me and still does to this day, that is how I got into my skincare career. The beauty industry and art industry both have their own unique challenges, it hasn’t always been easy but through passion & dedication I overcame every challenge along the way. I am a stubborn person, so I do not ever give up, if I fall, no matter how many times, I will stand up again stronger.
I’ve learned many lessons along the way, especially with laws and budgeting my business. Honestly, I am still learning! I learn something new every day, and I am the kind of person that will never stop learning. I love knowledge and applying it, so I can grow and bloom in this world.
If I want something to be known about our brand is our mission:
We are Poets on a mission to increase beauty while bringing poetry to life around the world, and we don’t just mean outer beauty, we mean real, raw & deep-down artistic beauty! The beautiful thing about Poet’s Garden Alchemist is not just that we sell great skincare without any toxic ingredients, but that we also are trying to deepen the meaning of beauty around the world through poetry. Beauty is so much more than having beautiful skin, and I think we forget sometimes that the deepest kind of beauty is found intellectually, through deepening our emotions and getting in touch with our soul. At Poet’s Garden Alchemist, we do not just illuminate your skin, but also your soul.
We also give back to our poet collaborators to help them along their journey, and donate 1% of all sales to the Poetry Foundation to help the poets. Our brand has become a poet’s movement where they can have their poems be featured in our website and we also sell some modern poets’ poetry books to support their journey and for their words to be known.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am the eternal wanderer! Traveling is a passion close to my heart. If I had to pick something to do with a friend, I would choose to do a yoga retreat.
I would choose to go to: Rythmia Resort in Costa Rica, a place to find your spiritual awakening while getting connected with nature. I would eat, sleep and everything at this inclusive resort as it would be the full experience that matters. I would travel around Costa Rica to visit some of their beautiful beaches and visit the Poetry Factory in Juan Santamaria Museum.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to do a shoutout to Hannah Duncan (Founder of WELL CBD), Angelica Kanter (Distributor for Ethica Beauty) and Claudia Fabian (Founder of the Beauty Debut Podcast) for their support and inspiration throughout the beginning stages of my business & my journey. They’ve been an inspiration and I love looking up to strong and dedicated women.
