We had the good fortune of connecting with Vivian Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vivian, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
Design to me is thoughts put into action. As simple as it sounds, crafting a well designed product with a holistic experience takes an incredible amount of thoughts—from market and user research, to endless amount of sketching until the perfect solution is found, and executing the sketch and bringing it into a manufacturable product. Being able to always keep the process in mind and think through all its states is crucial to the result of the design. In the end, a design may be presented with a simple and clean aesthetic, yet its complexity could not be tell from the surface. But as long as the design has well considered user experience and can change people’s life just a little bit, that’s all what designers strive for. And on top of that, I really enjoy the process.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Ever since I was a child, I have been curious about how things are done—how do machines and products work, and more importantly, why do people use things like so and why do they do things in such ways. My interest in art and science eventually led me to the design field, wherein lies the best way to combine human psychology, beauty, and logic.

As an Industrial Designer, I am a strategic thinker. Balancing art and logic, I love considering different perspectives, brainstorming crazy ideas and introducing unconventional twists. Discovering the big picture, I use limitations to design smarter solutions. Refinement of an idea is expressed through a clear design language that reflects the brand, tells a story and offers a focused strategy. As a designer, I want to challenge myself to craft holistic products and systems that resonate with the users.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Outside of design, I love street photography. I love being an observer of the world, and capture moments that I see and show it in my own perspective, give it my own interpretation. Street photography is also an excuse that allows me to just step outside and roam in the city! Where I live, Pasadena, is beautiful quiet neighborhood that I never get tired to walk around in. Silver Lake is also a place I like to discover and people watch. And if I am feeling touristy, I would drive down to Santa Monica, walk on the sand for a bit and watch the sunset. There are so many opportunities in the city if you want there to be!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As a young designer just entering the real world, I was incredibly lucky that throughout my school time, there were many teachers who taught me not only useful design skills, but also life skills such as how to be an honest, professional, and open person. And during my internships, I was guided by amazing designers that I am still keeping close connections with. My transition from a student to a designer professional certainly wouldn’t be this smooth without all their kind guidance.
