We had the good fortune of connecting with Voodo Fé and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Voodo, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting Art Gang was knowing that no other company would give me the space to create the way I wanted to in Music, Fashion, Art and Graphics. I also HATE being told what to do. I’m defiant by nature and by developing Art Gang, gave us the control to create whatever we wanted. I have amazing partners and an amazing team of snipers who understand one target, one bullet, one squeeze.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Please tell us more about your art: I’m a painter, fashion designer, musician, graphic and jewelry designer. I’m having an extremely fortunate creative career. Been lucky enough to either create with or for; the Obama’s, Calvin Klein, DKNY, April Walker (fashion icon), Carl Banks (Super Bowl winning, NY Giant Legend), Janelle Monáe, Beyounce, Wu-Tang, NBA, NFL, Run-DMC, Ice-T, Dave Chappelle, Talib Kweli and Chelsea Handler. There’s more, yet I don’t remember them all… lol

We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others:
I don’t know… I don’t really know what other creatives (outside of the cats I’m around), are doing..? I don’t go to gallery shows, fashion shows and really don’t listen to too much music. As a business theory, we choose collaboration over competition. We believe if one person can make a million dollars, then two people should be able to make three.

What you are most proud of or excited about:
For my art, there’s a few things, yet here’s 3. That my Family is represented on the wall’s of the Obama’s and that the uniforms I designed for the New Jersey Nets (before they came to Brooklyn) is hanging in the Barclay Center as a retired jersey for Jason Kidd and that I haven’t had a real job in over 25-30 years. I know the phrase ‘real job’ gets the reaction of ‘doing art is a real job’, yet that’s bullshit to me. My Parents had backbreaking jobs, and worked 2-3 of them. I literally making a living from something that’s as easy as breathing. I’m a believer in only doing things that I would do for free.

For my life, that I’ve had 10 surgeries (including having my right knee replaced), I’m bipolar, dyslexic (never read a book), been hit by 3 cars 3 different times, was a serious alcoholic, a pill popper, lost both parents in my mid 20’s and homeless a few times and that NONE of that has stopped me. I’ve been clean for over 7 years, I’m training to run a 5K and figured out a way using different techniques to control my manic behavior without meds.

How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy?
This version of me was one that I seen years ago, didn’t know how this was going to happen, yet the opportunities have been magical… and to be honest, the path hasn’t always gone as planned, yet the art has been easy a shit. I’ve NEVER had a creative block and we’ve started calculating all my works a few years ago and found that I did over 8,000 original pieces of music, art, fashion and graphics.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What I’ve learned was how important it was to remove everyones opinion out of my life. I not seeking the approval of not near one person on the planet. What that did was snatch all the power I gave away when I was younger and put decision making back in my hands. In respect to what the world knows about me, I’m not sure I care enough. Anyone’s judgement of me, good or bad, doesn’t come home with me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I don’t know… I’m not out enough to be a good guide.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve had A LOT of people in my life who have played HUGE parts in my development and I’ve made it my practice not to give shout outs because I know I’ll leave someone out. So with that said, I’d like to send a ‘Thank You’ out to everyone who’s on or has been on this special, weird, amazing voyage with me..
