We had the good fortune of connecting with Wendy Sterling and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wendy, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I believe divorce can be an empowering experience that women go through to find their true identity and voice to design the life that they want instead of feel stuck with the life that they have. I often work with divorced women who struggle with so much noise around fear of what is next, who they are and how they will get through the day. They’ve lost all hope in finding joy, love or peace again in their life. Just like I did 4.5 years ago.
I will never forget that late night I was driving home with my husband at the time and his phone rang not once, but five times. And in that moment I knew the entire foundation of our life was destroyed because my gut told me my worst fear was coming true. For the first time in a long time I chose to trust my intuition, instead of looking outward like I had always been taught to do my whole life.
It struck me that throughout my life that I had always been taught to not speak, just listen, and base who I was and my decisions off of what other people told me that I should do or be. Years later that was the dynamic I created in my marriage. I didn’t know who I was outside of being a wife and mother. And that day when I took a stand for myself, I realized I had to create my own life from here on out. But how do I begin to think about my new future, which felt heavy and scary.
I spent the next year learning from coaching experts on how to truly transform my life. I was being trained as a coach AND I became my own coach at the same time. When I saw all of the changes it made for me and my life, I decided to become a certified life coach. I didn’t know that this kind of life and transformation was possible for me nor did I know the kind of joy and freedom that I was going to experience reclaiming my own identity. I realized that if I took my 20 years of experience in Corporate America as a leader and as someone that had impacted so many others, combined with this new coaching methodology that I could make a profound impact in the world. I was so awakened and inspired that it became my calling. I was being called forth to bring this divorce recovery framework to the world.
And now as a Divorce Recovery Specialist and certified life coach, I take all the tools that I learned and synthesized them into helping other divorced women reclaim their identity and voice to transform their life. And like me, realize that their divorce was happening FOR THEM not TO THEM.
So many of us lose ourselves in our marriage and I didn’t know that it was possible to be live other way. I learned how to begin to reclaim my life, end my pity party, heal the wounds and mourn the loss of my marriage and dreams of the future. I came to accept my future as a single mom and finally start building the foundation for my new life that I wanted which I knew in my gut is going to be my next chapter. And now 4.5 years later those steps have become my proprietary 5-Step framework called The Divorce Rehab™ which is changing the conversation about divorce recovery.
Healing women from divorce is what I do. Empowering them to reclaim their voice and identity, confidently, to create their next best chapter is who I am.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a Divorce Coach as well as the leading global Divorce Recovery Specialist and founder of The Divorce Rehab™. I help divorcees wake up their senses to start standing in their power of who they are to create their best life instead of being a victim of it. Prior to founding my company and proprietary program, I established my 18-year career as a top-level advertising sales executive in the digital space, at the world’s most progressive social and lifestyle website brands (such as Who What Wear and Refinery29). After learning of my own unexpected divorce, I realized my divorce was a GIFT and I was meant to make a more profound impact in the world. My vision is for other women to see their divorce as an empowering experience that happens FOR them, not TO them. I’ve worked with countless women and men to guide them along their own personal transform and create their next best chapter!
I am a graduate of UCLA and a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC) from The Co-Active Training Institute. I am also certified by the International Coaches Federation as an ACC and the National Association of Divorce Professionals as a Certified Divorce Specialist (CDS). Wendy is the host of her own podcast, The Divorced Woman’s Guide™, as well as an author and an Advanced ThetaHealer®.
I believe divorce can be an empowering experience that women go through to find their true identity and voice so they can design the life they want instead of feeling stuck in one they have. Healing people through divorce is what I do. Empowering them to stand in their power to reclaim and rediscover their voice and identity is who I am.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were coming to town, I would take her to so many amazing places within a 1.5-2 hour drive of Los Angeles. We would head to Malibu and have a fun beach day! We would pick up food at The Malibu Mart and head over to Zuma Beach for a few hours of sun, sand and ocean sounds. Afterwards, we would head to the Malibu pier to grab happy hour cocktails and people watch while watching the sun set. The next day, I would drive her to Santa Barbara where we would walk the beach and pier to soak in the culture and beauty. Then we would head over to State Street to do some shopping! By late afternoon, we would walk to the Funk Zone to taste some interesting wines and beers while pairing it with cheese. We would conclude the evening having dinner at The Lark.
As you can see, my favorite experiences to have with my friends are surrounded by beautiful scenery, good food, wine, shopping and lots of quality connection!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
YES! I would like to dedicated by ShoutOut to my dear friend, Marlo Lyons, who posted on Facebook her career shift to become a life coach. I felt a calling to reach out, and while I did not know why, I knew it was important for us to connect. After reading her post, suddenly something spoke and clicked within me. I realized there is something more out in the world to be discovered, to initiate my true transformation that I have not discovered in therapy. I knew in my gut this was for me, so I quickly called her. And during our conversation I realized that my path to healing was to learn the tools that she had learned as a coach so I could coach my own self through it. And my life has forever been changed for the better as a result.
