We had the good fortune of connecting with Wesley Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wesley, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe the most important factor behind my success is team work. Running a business and brand requires me to wear many hats, however, I am blessed to have an amazing crew of people that assist me in bringing my vision to life. I understand that nobody makes it to the top on their own and it takes a dedicated group of individuals to effectively run an operation. Everybody involved with the brand has their own specific role(s) and they know exactly what is needed/expected of them. We have an open line of communication, great camaraderie and an unwavering commitment to our goals.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a musician and I have been working on my craft over the past 10 years. A distinguishing quality about my music is how fluid I am between different genres and styles. On my projects, I display the many ways I can approach a song. I am able to fuse elements from multiple genres and create my own unique sound. I never box myself in by saying “I won’t try that” or “I won’t sound good on this”. I always look to experiment and find creative ways to utilize my vocals and song writing abilities. What I am most proud of is how much i’ve grown as an artist and a man.
I am where I am, professionally, from hours of webinars, research, youtube interviews, guidance from older musicians and personal experiences. Reaching this point was not easy and there was plenty of trial and error involved. Often times, outsiders see the success but don’t think about what it took to get there. They might not know about the rough nights, the sacrifices, the expenses and the moments of self doubt. I overcame those hurdles and challenges by staying focused and reminding myself that I am closer to the finish line than the starting line. Ultimately, faith and a great support system helped me during tough times. Having people to call and converse with during periods of uncertaintity provided motivation, levity and clarity.
The biggest lessons that i’ve learned along this journey are; stay consistent, do your research, don’t forget your “why” and don’t be afraid to take a break when feeling overwhelmed. What I want the world to know about my story is that I created a door when doors were being closed on me. Also, I want people to know that my brand will continue to expand and create opportunities for others.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ok, so boom. For breakfast, we’ll hit up Yonders, Scrambler’s, The Original Pancake House, Irv’s, Grumpy’s and Yours Truly. For lunch, I would take them to Zhug, Kim’s, Slyman’s, Hola Taco’s, Tommy’s, Sharks, Swenson’s and Sauce The City. For dinner, we’ll go to Zanzibar, Edison’s Pizza Kitchen, Pearl’s Kitchen, Black Box Fix, Edwin’s and Geraci’s. For entertainment and leisure, we could visit The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, a live performance venue/bar called “Re:Bar”, a Cleveland Browns game, The Greater Cleveland Aquarium, The Cleveland Museum of Art and The Cleveland Cultural Garden. I would also visit my grandparent’s house to hang out and have a chat with them. My grandfather tells stories that will have you laughing for days. My home is my studio so we would go there and listen to some unreleased jams that I have in the stash. I’m a fan of Top Golf, we could swing by there and hit a few. Lastly, I love being by water so I would take them to a secret spot that has an amazing view of the lake and sunset.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many people that deserve more recognition for my success story, however, I would love to dedicate this shoutout to my producer and friend, Hype Alexander. A few years ago, Hype and I decided to embark on this musical journey together and I am so thankful that we did. Since the inception of our partnership, he has done nothing but motivate, push and elevate me and my sound. He has produced on my last 3 albums, as well as, producing instrumentals for our sync licensing tracks. We have the utmost respect for each other’s talents and work ethic. We joke all the time but we consider our musical dynamic similar to that of Snoop & Dre. Aside from music, he has become one of my closest friends and I consider him a brother of mine. We check in on each other’s mental health, know each other’s families and have a strong bond outside of creating. I receive tons of credit because I am the rapper/singer but Hype deserves just as much credit and recognition for all the hard work he has put in.
