Meet Will Sivy | Recording Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Will Sivy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Will, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking is paramount if you’re going to find any form of success on your own. I understand why it may be appealing for some to maintain the security and structure of working for someone. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, it’s just a path that never resonated with me personally. I’ve observed time and time again, that there is a clear correlation between risk and reward, not only career wise, but with life in general. More often than not, the greater the risk, the greater the reward. Furthermore, I also believe that our mindset completely shapes our existence, you’re more capable than you realize once you begin taking risks.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Rather than focusing on what sets me apart or comparing to others, I try to focus on exploring ways to create music I simply enjoy listening to. Whether or not the end result stands out from others, I’ll leave up to the listener. There’s little sense in trying to be “different” for the sake of being different. If that objectively stands at the forefront of what you’re doing as an artist, it’s easy to alienate your audience. People respond well to familiarity and if they have something they can instinctually recognize and grasp on to, it will only help lay a path for them to experience something new. I frequently draw from a wide range of influences, but at the end of the day, whatever I create will inevitably sound unique to me, simply because it came from me.
The overarching timeline of my pursuit with music certainly has not existed without immense challenges. You really have to think outside the box to piece together a sustainable music career nowadays. The traditional model of the music industry unfortunately doesn’t exist anymore. The path to success or sustainability in music, if you were to visualize it on a graph, would appear as a tangled ball of string, it’s about as far from a linear trajectory as one can get. A path that may work for one artist could easily backfire for another. There is “no one size fits all” formula. It can be daunting, but the unpredictable nature keeps it exciting. It’s like a never ending game of puzzles. Every challenge has a solution though. You do have to be a little crazy and be willing to make sacrifices. It’s certainly not for everyone.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I still haven’t really given myself the opportunity to be a tourist in LA yet. I’ve lived here for a handful of years and still have a lot of exploring to do. The coastal areas are beautiful, although, I’d recommend driving a couple hours outside of LA if you intend on swimming.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are honestly too many to list. If it has to be one, I would like to shoutout my dad. Growing up, a day wouldn’t pass by without his stereo system filling the house with music. I was immersed in the classics from the beginning, so my passion for music was pretty inescapable. My curiosity for guitar was fostered from a young age. I used to wear a little suit and tie while wielding a toy acoustic, flanked by the living room speakers, enacting Beatles records on repeat. Although, my dad never really practiced himself, I feel that his love for music emanates through me in a way. Needless to say, he has been one of my biggest advocates.
