We had the good fortune of connecting with Yrene Ramirez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yrene, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
As a concert photographer and music journalist, there’s an indescribable amount of fulfillment that comes with taking that perfect shot in life (pun definitely intended). Not only does it feel good to beautifully encapsulate a moment in time, whether it be in writing or in practice, but it feels far greater to make the subject of the image feel as bright as their captured passion. With a picture alone being worth a thousand words, I almost always hit my word count when writing reviews! Jokes aside, being able to pen together the live music experience while also tailoring the perfect gallery is a dream turned reality. That is why I chose to pursue this life for myself. There was once a period where making memories seemed out of reach due to my own obstacles, and now I strive to actively capture them in a field that makes me feel whole. I pursue this career daily, aspiring to make the subject of the image or write up feel as happy with their end results as I felt curating them.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I’m learning what it means to have a cleaner approach to my editing process, but I am a major sucker for color. Vibrance. Drama. As silly as it sounds, I aim to have a spicy vintage approach. I feel that weird combination of words in itself sets me apart. I’m most proud of a music publication I’m co-editor in chief for, The ANTI Magazine. Having started as a contributor, I always had a great love and passion for the publication. Despite working my average 9 to 5 during the day while I continue to build my portfolio to pursue working in the music industry full time, it is easily a pride and joy I will scream from any rooftop. I am here today as a result of tireless days, sleepless nights, the occasional emptied savings, and hardcore perseverance. The imposter syndrome is real, and the process of getting here was not easy as I’m not even definitively *there* yet. I’ll know I’m there when I can find a version of myself a few years from now and give them their first ever press pas. The rest will be history. There’s nothing I crave more than musical comradery. To be in the studio, capturing those moments with a silent shutter, to tour the world with my cohorts. I so badly want to grow beyond the roots I’ve embedded in the soil of Southern California.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a close friend visit the city, assuming we are working with a Prius and unlimited gas money, no one can fault a human being for driving straight to Pure Vita, an Italian restaurant located in West Hollywood. With everything on the menu (yes, EVERYTHING) being vegan, it’s like experiencing ecstasy, but tenfold, and yummy. Serving brunch, lunch, and dinner, please promise me you’ll try their pizza. Any pizza. Secondly, spending an evening at Beetle House and potentially barhopping to Boardners seems to be the most Los Angeles sentence to come out of my mouth short of “let’s grab Sugarfish after our movie at The Alamo Drafthouse”. DTLA is such a diverse space, it’s open to experience for all. No itinerary needed.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Redemption Road K9, now an east coast gem in the heart of ATL, provided a mentorship that taught me more life lessons than I will ever truly know. There’s not a moment that goes by where I don’t hear the sentiments “think outside of things” or “keep your head on a swivel” echo through my mind when it comes to adapting to the always changing conditions of the world. In addition to their team both human and canine, I genuinely dedicate my growth and success to *every* person I’ve ever crossed paths with. Even if for a fleeting moment, every interaction has held weight in my journey. Additionally, I’d like to thank the academy.
