We had the good fortune of connecting with Yui Schultz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yui, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always been into Nail Art but what really pushed me into this career was the experience from my previous job. I had a opportunity to do branding for a salon business and this position required multitasking so many things. I learned I truly enjoy more the creative part of work so I decided to become a Full time nail artist, since that was something that I could already start and I thought it’s a perfect career that fits in my dream lifestyle.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My brand name “Tokyo Syrup” means Tokyo =where I got inspired for my style as I grew up there .

Syrup = Gel ( gels looks like a honey/ syrup ) . My best friend helped me to decide this name.

And I asked my friend Amie to create my logo and she came up with Honey bear . I thought it’s perfect for my brand and everyone loves it.

When I am doing nail art, I try to not forget how I enjoyed dressing my self when I was teenager. You know that feeling everything was so new and I wasn’t afraid to try all the cute stuff.
I see that sparkle feeling in my clients when we choosing the design and it’s so fun !

Why I became a freelance nail artist because I wanted to do more detail work on each client . also I knew what my goals are already when I started Nails, so I made so many small goals towards to my bigger goals.
That way I could really focus on what I do or decide and today I’m working as a freelance nail artist in LA as It was one of my dream . and through doing nails , I get opportunity to work for fashion shows , music videos , so many other things that I love and it excites me! I haven’t reach my biggest goal yet but I will keep continue move on to my next goal and love to challenge new things . There are so many opportunities for a Nail Artist.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Definitely take them to explore the Great food in LA. These great Foods are one of the reason that I live in LA. I would take them to the Smorgasburg on Sunday at The Row DTLA.
Because you can enjoy so many best foods at once! Also there is a local hand-made products to shop and Row DTLA is a very unique building to see. My favorite shop is a Japanese stationary store called “ high tide”. You can find unique and useful stationery there.
I think Grand central market has similar vibes as you can enjoy many kinds of foods at ones. They have some local shop events on Saturday as well.

If I go to west LA, I would go to the Gjusta. This place is so beautiful and so LA I think . I loved the food as well.

And best Ethiopian food from little Ethiopia , some street foods around my studio Eaglerock/ Highland park are amazing too . I want all my Japanese friends to try Angel city Taco!
Also Gold burger in Highland park is Yam. I love to go to my client’s restaurant “ Chifa “ & Some brewery like highlandpark brewery to taste local craft beer. Fun facts about me, my dad owned a brewery in Japan so I love good craft beer !

I actually have a hidden food account on IG @tokyosyrup.food
I usually share with clients so they can look back what I recommended during the service . Now you know I love talking about foods !

Other than foods, I would take my friends to the flea market, farmers market to shop local stuff , vintage clothing . Maybe a big one like the rose bowl , Melrose trading post , silver lake flea .

Maybe enjoy live music at Greek theater or Hollywood bowl because I’ve never see the music venue like that in another place.

So much things to do in LA !!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My friends and clients who gave me positive advice and support. It motivated me and helped me to decide become a freelance artist . I love to stay around those positive people always 🙂

Also Big thanks to my friend
Amie Alvarado who made my Tokyo Syrup logo. I get so many compliments on it all the time and I love it.
