We had the good fortune of connecting with Yves Bright and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yves, how do you think about risk?
I have very little fear of failure. I believe failure Is a big part of learning how to succeed. I wouldn’t ever consider myself a true success if I never took chances.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What can I say? I am a professional surfer, actor and photographer. I love all 3 professions equally. They all charge my passion in their own little magical way. Surfing threads me into nature’s fabric. Riding waves, swimming with dolphins, seals and sometimes sharks…It’s like a drug…and I have been completely addicted to it since I started surfing a few days before my 9th birthday. Acting allows me to temporally fully throw myself into and live in worlds “real life” does not permit me to live in…And the beauty of it is that I can walk away from it as soon as “cut” is called. Photography gives me the opportunity to recreate moments in life, one frame at a time, and tell a story through the only use of imagery. One image can tell a story forever. As a headshot photographer (ACTORS WANT TO READ THIS PART), I give my clients a scene with a back story, so when they look into the camera, they see people…and they have a strong opinion towards them. So every frame I take of them is filled with life. (a note to actors. It is not enough to be interesting. You need to be INTERESTED, in your headshot.) The biggest challenge is for others to accept that I can be equally dynamic in all 3 professions. The question I have always gotten was, “what are you? A surfer? Actor? Photographer?” So silly! Why can’t I be all 3? Life is too short to not take every opportunity possible to fill our passions.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, I guess we can pretend life has resumed some sort of normalcy, for the sake of argument. I have lived in LA since I was 4 years old so we won’t be going to any highly visited Tourist spots. No Hollywood, No Universal Studios. No Star sighting tours. We will go to some low key surf spots. Low key hikes. Low key desert areas. I can tell you where these places are but they would less likely stay low key so…. I am not much of a “foodie” guy, I eat as clean as possible. No fast food. You won’t catch me at Nobu either. I love Sushi but “mom and pop” sushi houses only. I am not eating to be “seen”. We would definitely bring a camera where ever we go. I am guessing my friend(s) is a creative so we will want to do some editorial type shots.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Of course, I learn from studying the work of others but I don’t look to anyone else for guidance. I only look to others for inspiration and I tend to be inspired by all walks of life. I probably lean on my family for a form of validation, if anything. I’m quite spiritual and really enjoy surrounding myself with good energy. As a creative, I think it’s very important to always be as original as possible…to always create.
