We had the good fortune of connecting with Rae Drazin, Ph.D. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rae, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe that my passion for what I do, and the fact that it’s obvious to my clients that I am passionate about my work is the most important factor behind my success.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am an independent patient advocate, specializing in medical navigation. My practice is geared to ensuring that each of my clients gets the best and most appropriate medical care. I offer support when a new diagnosis seems overwhelming; education about the condition and treatment; and empowerment to take an active part in the decision-making regarding treatment. My background as a cancer researcher, microbiologist, university lecturer, and consultant to medical device and pharma companies provides me with a skill set that is unique in this profession. I love the idea of helping people when they are going through a difficult time. I’ve always felt this way, and when the profession of patient advocacy came into being, I knew that this is what I wanted to do. My challenges lie in remembering that I am not a volunteer, and that my expertise deserves monetary compensation. I am also still learning to set limits and boundaries with my clients, even though I often become much like a family member. My current goal is to raise awareness regarding the profession of patient advocacy, since few people know that we advocates exist and individuals dealing with difficult medical issues need not face them alone.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my best friend to the amazing museums we have in Los Angeles–LACMA, Getty, Broad, Norton Simon. I would also take her to the Venice Canals and to the beach. Even if the weather was not warm, walking on the beach is so spectacular. I would also take her to the galleries at Bergamot Station. And, of course to the Disney Hall (or to the Hollywood Bowl in summer.) For sustenance, I would take her to a great sushi restaurant, and to any of the excellent gelato shops. Driving up the coast to Malibu and all the way to Santa Barbara would be a great, fun day.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband deserves more than a little credit. He has encouraged me to do this work, advises me on the business aspects, and always has a terrific meal waiting for me when I arrive home exhausted after being in the emergency room with a client.
