We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Cahill and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind GEWl has mainly been our loyal fans. We have been so lucky in a sense that our growth has mainly been from people sharing GEWL with friends, family and posting their experiences on social media. Just a simple post on Instagram can spread like wildfire and GEWL is an example of that. We always do our best to provide high quality great tasting food along with a loyal delivery service. Our customers want delivery, they want convenience and GEWL is here for it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
GEWL… “Because Good Food Deserves a Soundtrack” is a woman-owned and operated sandwich shop in Orange County. I saw there was a need for healthy, good food in the area and with so many places closed due to COVID and grocery stores bare, I decided to start selling food on social media. We specialize in sandwiches, baked goods and desserts, our plant-based offerings have a cult-like following in Orange county but mainly everyone knows GEWL for the Black Hole Sun, an Egg-in-a-Hole BLT sandwich creation. While so many items on the menu are fan favorites, we rotate our playlist (menu) weekly only highlighting 4-5 sandwiches, one dessert (usually picked by fan votes) and always our homemade chips (The Groupies) and the famous White Rabbit Jalapeno Ranch Sauce. GEWL wouldn’t be here without our loyal fans, we may be a small business but there are real people behind GEWL. We care about our community, giving great customer service and quality products, and our authenticity and creativity will keep you coming back for more.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First off I would hands down take my someone to Long Beach. It was the first city I moved to when I came to CA and it will always have a special place in my heart. For breakfast I would go to Coffee Cup Cafe on 4th street, totally one of the best hidden gems that serves up the best coffee and omelettes ever. Afterwards we could head on over to 4th street retro row, with enough vintage and record shops to make your heart go wild. For lunch, I would suggest Lola’s for a spicy watermelon margarita or even the Pike Bar & Grill, their lobster tacos are to die for! I could never pass up a lobster taco from the Pike, and the fun dive bar energy and music history would make any music lover scream with excitement. Finally we would end the night at Alex’s Bar, a Long Beach staple, to watch a band, take photos in their legendary photobooth and waste the night away.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
While I feel there are so many little things that have led to our success, I know of many awesome eateries that have been born out of this pandemic. I have always been so inspired and amazed by the pandemic pizza creators, hustling each week and making it look flawless such as @doughdaddyla over in West LA and @focacciaboi in Anaheim. If you don’t follow these guys, get on it! You will not be disappointed.
