Hi You Were Never Lovelier, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think risks offer opportunities & challenges. The biggest risks I’ve taken have thankfully been the ones I’m most grateful for, such as changing my major in college, moving to Texas in my car for a job opportunity, then, shortly after, building a camper van & taking it to LA as my home-on-wheels to find bandmates & an awesome place to live.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m the frontman of a 3-piece pop punk band called, “You Were Never Lovelier”. After meeting through my Craiglist ad, recording music, & streaming on Twitch the past year, we’re eager to release our radical first single called, “Erika” on July 23rd, followed by a music video. “Erika” is an upbeat, hard rock song with a dash of sexiness – insert *winking* emoji – and the music video looks like it’s scrolling past various movie sets.

My solo artist project, Jay Edwards, is a fun outlet to release various types of songs, whether for personal enjoyment, sync, etc., but forming a band has always been the real goal. I converted a cargo van in Houston, TX, which would serve as my home in LA. That van is one of my biggest achievements & investments. I learned about carpentry, solar energy, & heavy duty suspension repairs (yikes). I did so much work on it, but it paid off ’cause I could basically live anywhere & not pay rent. Anyway, I was grateful to meet plenty of songwriters & find bandmates within months of living here.

I really want to connect with people through music to hopefully make their day better or at least help them feel like they have a friend who’s going through tough times with them. I often write about my experiences or those of ex-partners revolving around things like break-ups, depression, self-image, eating disorders, & suicide. If you listen to “Jay Edwards” on Spotify, you might be confused, but the “sad boi” songs are going to be played with You Were Never Lovelier for sure because they help people feel like they’re not alone. Everybody’s going through something, whether you can see it or not, & You Were Never Lovelier gets it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Cocobella Creamery is a fantastic vegan + gluten-free ice cream place in Hollywood, which is also close to Cactus Taqueria (on Vine St). I love tacos, so I’d always recommend trying food trucks too. Scum & Villainy Cantina is great for Star Wars fans like myself. For live music, I’d go to Hotel Cafe, The Palladium, or The Federal. There’s so much to choose from though! AAAGH. I like taking people to see cool nature stuff, so I’d recommend Venice, El Matador beach, Wildwood Regional Park (has a waterfall at the end of a hike), Joshua Tree, & Montaña de Oro (by Pismo Beach). Beverly Hills, Hollywood Blvd, & Melrose Ave are also some great places to just walk around. Oh, and barcades like Dave & Busters, Blipsy Bar (K-town), & 1-Up are super fun!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My voice teacher in college, Dr. Priebe, taught me (Jay: YWNL frontman) how to sing properly and musically. I will be forever grateful for his instruction. The Gonzalez family in Houston, TX provided a place for me to live promptly after arriving to the state in my car out of the goodness of their hearts & allowed me to stay even while I converted my van in their driveway (and burnt food a couple of times on the stove…sorry, again). Also, big thanks to my employers from various states for being flexible when I had shows to play or surgeries to recover from.
