We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonia Iris Lozada and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonia Iris, how does your business help the community?
Poetic Resurrection podcast began because during the pandemic. There was much uncertainty in our lives. I saw Black Life Matters and others donating their time to feed and help the needy. They were all taking risks. I felt I needed to contribute to better others’ lives. The prevalent dichotomy of this time was clear in the news. Even though there were some views I didn’t agree with, I still saw fear in them. So, I thought why not work on ourselves and teach acceptance through guests, talks and meditations. If we have self-acceptance, then everything else should fall into place. With acceptance, you don’t blame others for your life. You understand it and know the change has to materialize from within oneself.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m most proud of the Poetic Resurrection podcast my writing and being a meditation teacher on Insight Timer. My three books Inspire Me: Raw, Follow: Akashic Dreaming Through Time, and Inspire Me: Perception have all been number one on Amazon. I’m known for my acting because of the many years I’ve been in the industry. There’s a sense of freedom that comes from doing what you love. The long hours and setbacks might be frustrating but there is also joy in following your calling. Throughout my life I have had several interests including acting professionally (still doing this); had a punk underground fanzine in the 1980s where I interviewed and photographed several bands including the Clash, Echo & the Bunnymen, the Cure among many others. At UCLA, I published an Ethnomusicology newsletter for the dept.
My challenge with all of this was I was self-taught and didn’t have a mentor. It’s so important to have mentors and not just while growing up, adults need mentors too. You have to accept failure as a step to the next part of your life. Challenges are part of learning. If we can accept a setback or a loss as a step in our development then challenges become lessons. That’s why I started my podcast where perceptions are explored. It’s a place for listeners to start asking themselves self-reflecting questions. What a beautiful world it would be if we felt safe and secure.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love culture and of course, I would need to plan this with my visitor. My week-long excursion would start in my neighborhood around Universal studios. We’d go to trendy restaurants, visit Griffith Park, Lake Hollywood, and Hollywood landmarks. Then the rest of the week we would hit different areas for their food and culture. I’d take them to the art museum and go eat Ethiopian food. I’d take them downtown Los Angeles to Little Tokyo, China Town, and Olvera Street. We drive up Pacific Coast Highway to Santa Barbara and work our way back through Ojai. Visit Old Town Pasadena and then make a trip to San Diego where we can visit a true old western town. If we are not too exhausted by then a hike in Los Angeles Forest. The last day would be total LA relaxation by the pool

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
