We had the good fortune of connecting with Alisa Wyatt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alisa, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Choosing to focus on what we know which is the classical style of Pilates. We could have create a website with all kinds of workouts on it but narrowing our focus to the thing we are experts at was key to finding our audience and feeling confident in what we share.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We run an on-demand fitness site that is focused on Pilates but it’s really our niche in the Pilates world that sets us apart. Our focus is on the style of Pilates as it was originally taught by Joseph Pilates and we’re proud to be the only place online you can find some of the most respected Pilates teachers in the world – including two of the last remaining teachers trained by Mr. Pilates himself.
Getting to where we are now has been an incredible learning process and it was in no way easy! The biggest hurdle has been technical challenges and we still struggle with that aspect because the online world changes so fast. We overcome this challenge over and over with patience and being comfortable with change and having to re-learn pretty much everything every 2 years.
We really value being a small, family-run company. Founded by my husband and myself 10 years ago, we are still less than 10 employees who are mostly part-time. With all of the big players in the fitness industry getting into the on-demand world, we are grateful to have such a dedicated audience who values our personal approach to serving their needs.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We live in the South Bay so my here’s what I often do with friends when they visit: – bike from my house in Redondo Beach to Hermosa Beach for early breakfast at The Source in Hermosa Beach, followed by beach volleyball (many of the pro volleyball players who live here teach group or private classes so I’d take my friend to class with me). Afterward, we’d hit the surf for a swim or a surf session.
– we’ll be hungry after all that so after a quick clean up we’ll hit Love & Salt in Manhattan Beach for lunch, for pizza and salad.
– there’s great shopping in downtown Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo so after lunch we’d stroll around and hit my favorite bookstore, Pages, as well pick up gifts for family & friends at Gumtree.
– we might need a time out at this point so for the afternoon we could splurge and grab a massage at Terranea in Palos Verdes (hiking the beautiful cliffs there is also amazing if it’s not a beach day). Or if we’re feeling less spendy, I love going to Riviera Health Spa in Torrance for a Korean scrub.
– if we’re staying local, I’d book us an evening ressie at the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa with dinner before at Greenbelt on the Pier Plaza or Pura Vida in Redondo Beach.
– a walk to the end of the Hermosa Pier in the moonlight is the best way to finish an amazing day in the South Bay!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We wouldn’t be where we are now with the advice and guidance of Seran Glanfield at SpringThree. She has been a friend and mentor who we rely on in our business.
