We had the good fortune of connecting with Molly Goldberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Molly, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued a creative and artistic career because I had to. The way my mind and emotions work, I just cannot live a mainstream, cut and dry life. I need to be moving and making with anything I do.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
As a costume designer, I think what sets me apart from others is my eye for colors and patterns. Obviously the most important part of costuming is sticking to the storytelling and being true to the character. However, I always make sure that every character looks like they take their personal style as seriously as I do. It was not easy to get where I am now. I had a lot of twists and turns, like transferring colleges twice, take breaks from college, etc. and I don’t think I’m done twisting and turning, but I’m certainly more firm in who I am what I want to do than ever before.

I’ve learned a lot about the importance of sticking up for myself, and being confident in my views so I can back them up to other people. Women are constantly having to defend themselves and get people to listen to them, and I’m no different. Not only is this important for me to know, but it means that when I’m in a position above others, I need to make sure I’m a) hiring women and b) listening to them how I know they need to be.

Lastly, the most important piece of advice I’ve been given is to not try to copy anyone else or compare myself to anyone else because there only needs to be one of everyone and there’s only going to be one Molly Goldberg.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I. Love. NYC. Parks. If I could spend a week just sitting in Central Park, Washington Square Park, Bryant Park, DUMBO Main Street Park, etc, I would do it. First, I would go get some Wafels and Dinges because their food is splendid, and then each day I would sit in a different spot in each park. One of my favorite things is people watching, so this is a dream scenario. Then if we’re talking activities that cost money, I’d love to see all of the shows on Broadway and off.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It takes a village to get me going. My mom is a constant cheerleader and person to get me off the couch when I’m bummed. Also my former mentor Sydney. She’s the one that got my foot in the door of costume design when she took me on as an intern in 2016. Besides them, I have wonderful family and friends keeping me going on the reg.
