We had the good fortune of connecting with BENJII YANG and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi BENJII, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always tried to find the best way to touch many lives & being a creative made the most sense. Everything we have in our lives right now is a result of someones creativity & art. Art is impact, creativity is freedom. Creating something from nothing & bringing an artistic idea to reality to share with the world takes a certain amount of courage and that has always been cool to me. You never know who’s watching & who could be inspired by your work/vision.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always loved music & the feeling it would give me when I listened to it so the idea of making my own was cool to me. I remember watching this video of J Cole on Complex News giving a tour of his childhood home in Forest Hills & there was a part where he said he was trying to rap but he didn’t have money for beats so he made his own & that turned on the light bulb in my head so I started to learn how to make beats & produce songs. Coming up where i’m from at the time there wasn’t a big music scene, so I had to use the internet as my networking & brand building tool. I built majority of my brand and relationships by uploading beats on youtube & connecting with creatives on social media. It was definitely a tough process in the beginning but just like anything else it took a lot of hard work and belief. I’m just another person out here who’s chasing their dreams, that’s what my story & brand represents, a dream chaser. I’m here to show to show people they can dream as big as they want and go as far as they want.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s a lot of people that deserve their flowers. God above all, My amazing family & friends for being the support system I need. My long time collaborator Niko, my great friends & partners in the game Vurdell “Vscript” Muller, Nelson Bridges & everyone over at Supafriendz Music, and a big thank you to everyone i’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years.
