Meet Evonne Chua | Interior Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Evonne Chua and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Evonne, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
At the age of 17, I was often attracted to technical art, such as geometrical drawings and perspective art. I always knew that liberal arts are not the path that I would like to pursue. After graduating from high school, I was determined to continue my studies in architecture. During my young adulthood, to enroll an architectural program in a private college was not the best option for my family due to our financial situation. Therefore I tried my best to look for an alternative program that is still related to my interest and discovered interior design.
Being an interior design student wasn’t as easy as I thought. I’ve realized that my creativity skills were not as great as how I imagined. I got questioned by my lecturer on a project I did for class. He asked, ” Why did you take the interior design program? ” and then he continued ” How did you do in your final year exams?” I knew that the questions he asked were trying to tell me that I am not suitable to study design, as, during my days in my college, students that did well in their final year are often associated with a poor sense of creativity. I was upset and cannot help but to prove him wrong!
After graduating from college, I started to work as an interior designer. It was even challenging to transform the design we did on paper into reality. I believed that a successful design comes from the persistence of the designer and insisting on their thoughts and value throughout the process, and never easily be persuaded by those who want to complete it easily and quickly. There is no shortcut to creating a good design, and behind all the great designs are the contribution of blood, sweat, and tears by designers that one can never imagine.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’ve always wanted to create design work with my sense of creativity. It didn’t take long for me to decide to run my studio (Yimun Design) and start designing how I re-imagined things would be.
After running the business for one year on my own, I’ve made an important decision to invite my former colleague – Laurel Tan to join me on this journey. Ever since we are inseparable, she becomes the best working partner that I have could ever find, and we have worked on many projects together throughout the years. There have been many challenges especially when Covid hits and businesses were affected. But we are glad that we were able to make it through and got us where we are today.
I’m also grateful that clients gave us full trust in the design and our work. From commercial to residential projects, we are thankful that we can create spaces aesthetically and also functions practically.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
All of the beaches and coastlines! Nothing beats the scenery and the breeze of the sea, that would be the perfect place where we’ll do all the catching up!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, it will be my working partner – Laurel Tan! I am very lucky to have her as she always supports me through hard times and we always had the same vibes working out projects together! We are a great complement to each other in work, and that is what brings us to where we are today in Yimun Design.
Secondly, a shoutout to my husband – Christopher! My husband supports me no matter what struggles I encountered or every decision I made. He is always the guy behind who pulls me up when I am about to fall.
I would also like to thank my former colleagues and employer who gave me all the guidance at work. I have gained a lot of design knowledge to be implemented to my creativity. Some are always willing to share their experience to me even after I started my own journey. I am really grateful to have met you guys!
