We had the good fortune of connecting with Pixie Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pixie , life can be so busy as an adult, and for many, especially those who’ve moved to a new city, making friends can be hard. We’d love to hear your thoughts?
Making friends has always been a struggle for me. The majority of my life I’ve suffered from severe anxiety, depression, & other mental illness. Because of this as an adult I rarely left the house. I was afraid. I feared judgement. More recently my condition has gotten to a much more manageable point. I’ve realized something, people are so much more understanding than I expected them to be. I was able to make friends very easily just by being open with people. I think that is the key. We need to be open & unafraid of letting people see & know who we are.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Growing up I was the chubby kid. It was hard looking at magazines & never seeing women that looked like me. The clothes the models wore would never look right on my odd body type. As a plus size model I’m able to show that us bigger women are beautiful & there are so many clothes out there that are flattering to matter what your shape. My proudest moment was the first time I was published. I almost cried I was so happy. It’s something I never thought I’d accomplish. Now every time I get published again I do a silly little happy dance around the room & won’t stop smiling for probably about a week straight. To be completely honest the biggest challenge I’ve had to overcome is myself. The people around have always been very supportive as well as in the modeling community but I’m the one that would hold myself back. I would constantly tell myself that I wasn’t good enough. It’s taken time but with the help of family & friends & been able overcome the challenge of my negative self. I consider myself a positivity promoter. I’m a hug dealer. I’m 100% magical. I am TheDarkPixie

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A couple of places we would definitely have to hit would be Bookman’s on 19th Ave. & Northern. Drawn to Comics on 58th Ave. & Glendale. Modern Round on 83rd Ave. & Mariners Way. And also A Shot of Java on 58th Ave. & Glendale.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely would like to give a shout out to the “Women Networking in Photography Phoenix Photographers, Models, HMUAs” on Facebook. I’ve met so many incredible people from this group & have learned so much.
