We had the good fortune of connecting with Luis Alvarez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Luis, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?

Most of my life has been driven by “what ifs.” Like “What if I did this? What if I tried that?” I’m at the point in my life where I want to take as many risks as possible. Especially since I held myself back for a very long time.

I always knew that I would contribute to the culture in some way. Especially when some of it has been corrupt for quite some time now. I started to think, “I want to do this too!” Next thing I knew, I came up with a whole list of projects that I have yet to get started on. Every idea is based on curiosity and seeing how far I can take them.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I’m very proud of how Brown Sugar Garments came together. Everything was carefully curated to a theme. Thanks to God & the very few people that I was surrounded by, I remained patient and persistent. I’m still tweaking my first drop to this day, and it’s been almost two years since I decided to work on this.

Before releasing, I constantly asked myself how I wanted to introduce Brown Sugar to the industry. After all, the first impression counts. I did my best with what I had at the time and with no prior experience. Just the internet & my mind filled with ideas.

BSG was the first and most challenging project I have done so far. In starting it, I had no idea where to begin. I eventually decided to get the legal side of it done first. Over time, I got paranoid about it to the point where it slowed down my creativity. I was hard on myself, and I went through burnout.

I can go on and on about the obstacles I’ve faced throughout the making of my drop. But the best thing that I’ve learned was discovering how I work best overall. This will save anyone in the long run.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I honestly don’t know anyone outside of my area that stayed longer than three days. Ventura Blvd. is usually where I’m at, so I’d take any friend there.

For shopping, I recommend Ventura Blvd. from Sherman Oaks to Studio City. Places like Fairfax and malls can get overwhelming. There’s also a churro joint called Happy Days Cafe. They have one of the best churros I’ve ever had. There’s another joint called Stout that got some amazing loaded fries. CPK is fire too. Avocado Egg Rolls, Thai Chicken Pizza, a Strawberry Mango Cooler, & a butter cake with an ice cream scoop on top. Share them jawns. Thank me later.

Ventura Blvd. got a little bit of everything. Catch me grocery shopping for my dog or at a Coffee Bean working on projects in my MacBook. Them Mango Coldbrews be hitting this time of year.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Everyone that supported me so far deserves this shoutout. They know who they are and that I appreciate all their love & support. I spend most of my time alone, so I can’t just say, family or friends. I mention what I do to everyone & get feedback about it. Whether positive, constructive, or negative, I welcome it all!
